About the Role

Assist journeyman in planning, layout and installing forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts for installation of concrete structures in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Use appropriate hand (e.g., hammer, pliers) and power tools (e.g., skill saw, concrete vibrator) to properly measure, cut, assemble and install forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts.
• Construct built-in-place or prefabricated wooden forms according to specifications for molding concrete structures.
• Erect built-in-place forms or assemble and install prefabricated forms.
• Insert spreaders and tie-rods between opposite pieces to maintain specific dimensions.
• Anchor and brace forms to fixed objects using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks and timber.
• Build wooden structures such as scaffold supports and frame shelters according to specifications and project specifications.
• Help pour concrete into finished forms to specified textures; vibrate, level, smooth and shape surface of concrete; finish concrete surfaces to specifications.
• Remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces using power grinder or chisel and hammer and patch holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
• Install all other items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications.
• Participate in all safety related processes and programs as requested.
• Engage with your work team to achieve zero injuries; understand that no job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised.
• Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional; use stop work authority until issues are resolved.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
• Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate them.
• Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, warning tags, sirens).
• Understand, support, and follow lockout/tag out procedures.
• Attend site-specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
• Follow established safety rules and maintain a safe, clean work environment.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Perform arithmetic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) with whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
• Listen to co-workers' suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations; provide feedback and ask questions when appropriate.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job.
• Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
• Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
• Learn to read and understand plans and specifications; visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• Assist in planning, installing, and/or repairing structures according to plans and specifications; assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
• Learn to observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
• Notify supervision of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.
• Examine and inspect field conditions to identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures; take corrective actions as needed and report issues to supervision.
• If certified to operate equipment, ensure construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, and in good working order; complete Daily Equipment Inspections for equipment being utilized.
• Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience working in the carpenter craft or similar craft as a helper, or a combination of work experience and training.
• Developing knowledge of industrial carpenter's craft including fabrication and erection of forms (e.g., Symons), fabrication and placement of rebar including proper tying techniques, and placing, finishing, and sealing concrete.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Must possess all necessary tools (see Carpenter Helper Tool List).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected), which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Qualifications

• NCCER Construction Craft Laborer certification.
• NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven areas.
• See and hear naturally or with correction; full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to set procedures; requires repetitive movement.
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions.
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
• Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.).
• Work in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions; exposure to distracting or uncomfortable sounds and noise levels.
• Work around hazardous equipment; this position is considered safety-sensitive.
