Beautician/Barber
About the role
The Beautician/Barber prepares, conditions, and cuts the hair of male and female midshipmen and other authorized patrons of the Naval Academy on a rotation basis as needed. This position is with the Barber and Beauty Shop of the Naval Academy Business Services Division (NABSD), a Non-Appropriated Fund Instrumentality (NAFI) located at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. NAFI generates its own funds through operations and is not funded by Congress.
Responsibilities
- Shampoos, styles, shapes, waves, straightens, cuts, and curls patrons' hair.
- Cuts and shapes hair into various styles to suit the patron.
- Performs scalp treatments as requested.
- Works with straight, wavy, curly, or kinky hair, developing styles appropriate for the individual.
- Checks the condition of skin, scalp, and hair for disorders such as sores, abrasions, or diseases that may interfere with services or require medical attention.
- Keeps working areas clean and maintains tools and equipment in a sterilized and sanitary condition.
- Prepares tools and accessories in advance for patron appointments.
- Operates an automatic washer/dryer.
- Maintains a minimum pace of one haircut every fifteen minutes for men and one every forty-five minutes for women.
- Demonstrates continual use of arms, hands, and fingers with great dexterity; stands, sits, bends, reaches, and lifts light items.
Requirements
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance; requires being at least 18 years of age.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
- Verification of employment eligibility in the United States is required (E-Verify participant).
- Flexible employees are hired based on business needs.
- Must be able to understand and communicate in English.
- Participation in Direct Deposit is required.
- Must maintain the privacy of official work information and data and demonstrate the highest level of ethical conduct.
Qualifications
To meet the basic requirements for the Beautician/Barber position (NA-7603-07), you must meet one of the following:
- Experience performing Beautician/Barber duties, including cutting and shaping all types/textures of hair, performing scalp treatments, shampooing, and styling hair.
- Satisfactory completion from a certified school of Barbering or Cosmetology, or the ability to obtain a state Barber or Cosmetology license within 30 days.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Experience as a Beautician/Barber.
- Experience with all types and textures of hair.
- Experience with military hairstyles.
- Experience using shears, electric clippers, and trimmers.
- Experience performing hair care treatments.
- Ability to perform protective hairstyles (braiding) and/or basic updos (preferred).
Additional Information
The high-volume barber/beauty shop at the United States Naval Academy is seeking talented individuals to join the team servicing over 4,000 students. Candidates should have daytime availability for 3+ days a week, including Fridays, with 8-hour shifts. Perks include earning tips and step pay increases.
