About the role

This position is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, focused on the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. The BE‑7 Valves – Propulsion Engineer II will own a valve component on the BE‑7 Engine Program through the full development lifecycle, from early conceptual trades to production support.

Responsibilities

  • Design valve parts and assemblies, select materials and processes while considering manufacturability, mass, and cost.
  • Create 3D CAD models, define part features, and produce detailed drawing drafts for parts, sub‑assemblies, and top‑level assemblies.
  • Develop analysis deliverables such as performance predictions, tolerance stack‑ups, and review structural, thermal, and fluid analyses from FEA/CFD specialists.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to review manufacturing plans, build procedures, and tool designs.
  • Plan, set up, and execute component‑level testing; analyze data and report results to mitigate technical risk and verify requirements.
  • Work with supply‑chain and suppliers to ensure on‑time delivery of procured parts and define requirements for complex components.
  • Support production sustaining activities by troubleshooting quality issues and dispositioning non‑conformities.
  • Coordinate with program leaders and other component teams (Systems Engineering, Avionics, Integration, Engine Test) to address cross‑program impacts.
  • Partner with value‑stream leaders, production control, technicians, and Operations stakeholders at the Valves Factory to meet hardware manufacturing demand.
  • Conduct tactical planning, trade scope, schedule, cost, and risk, and manage development activity schedules to track key milestones.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in an engineering discipline (aerospace, mechanical, or physics preferred).
  • 2+ years of professional engineering experience with valves, pumps, mechanisms, electromechanical actuation, or fluid‑control systems.
  • U.S. citizenship, national status, permanent residency, or lawful refugee/asylee status.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational and communication skills, and ability to coordinate across a large program.
  • Ability to own and execute development activities with minimal granular direction.
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanical design, fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, and thermodynamics.
  • Direct experience designing, manufacturing, and testing valves for incompressible or compressible flow.
  • Knowledge of valve architectures, seal designs, material selection, and load‑path considerations.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and part/assembly drawing creation.
  • Experience with data processing, analysis, and non‑conforming hardware evaluation.
  • Familiarity with subtractive manufacturing processes (turning, milling, grinding, etc.) and quality requirements.
  • Test planning, execution, data analysis, and reporting for valve verification (flow rate, leakage, shock/vibe, thermal, life).
  • Experience designing test setups for pressurized fluid flow, including selection of control valves, ducts, fittings, and instrumentation.
  • Exposure to cryogenic fluid and high‑pressure gas testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Experience with rocket or jet engines.
  • Design experience with components exposed to cryogenic fluids and high‑pressure gases.
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) expertise.
  • Knowledge and application of FEA tools (ANSYS preferred).
  • Proficiency with Creo 10+ and Windchill 12+.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.100 (Engineering Drawing Practices) and ASME Y14.5 (GD&T).
  • Supplier management experience.
  • Project management skills for scope, schedule, and cost control.
  • Experience creating and managing schedules for moderately complex projects.
  • Working within a Scrum‑based agile framework.
