About the role

The ED charge nurse is responsible for assisting current staff with managing patient flow and helping care for patients being held in the emergency department, assisting with transfer requests to other facilities, and performing all duties related to mixing medications that cannot be stored in the RX station. They will be the contact person for all staff members regarding callouts or late arrivals, handle all patient complaints, and work with security to resolve any issues. They will also be responsible for ordering stock and special order supplies, collecting supplies from the storeroom after hours, and responding to any rapid response called in an outpatient area.

The ED charge nurse performs all ED RN duties as needed. The registered nurse is responsible for assessing, evaluating, and delegating the delivery of skilled patient care in a stressful, fast-paced, time-constrained environment. ED nurses integrate evidence-based knowledge, make rapid assessments, critical decisions, and perform life-saving interventions while prioritizing and multitasking. The role requires a specialized skill set beyond traditional nursing, including care for patients across the age continuum, continuous education, skill refinement, knowledge procurement, and risk recognition. The ED nurse has continuous interaction with physicians, patients, family members, other care areas, and management, and is held to the ANA code of ethics while being accountable for improving patient care.

Responsibilities

• Assist with managing patient flow and care for patients held in the emergency department
• Handle transfer requests to other facilities
• Mix medications that cannot be stored in the RX station
• Serve as the contact person for staff callouts or late arrivals
• Address and resolve all patient complaints, collaborating with security as needed
• Order stock and special order supplies
• Collect supplies from the storeroom after hours
• Respond to rapid responses in outpatient areas
• Perform all duties of an ED registered nurse, including assessment, evaluation, and delegation of patient care
• Make rapid assessments, critical decisions, and perform life-saving interventions in a fast-paced environment
• Prioritize tasks and multitask effectively
• Engage in continuous education, skill refinement, and knowledge procurement
• Interact with physicians, patients, family members, other care areas, and management
• Uphold the ANA code of ethics and improve patient care

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree from an accredited School of Nursing (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
• Licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Alabama
• One year of Registered Nursing experience in an acute care or rehab environment
• Previous supervisory experience preferred

Qualifications

• BLS certification within 30 days of hire/transfer
• ACLS certification within 30 days of hire/transfer
• PALS certification within 30 days of hire/transfer (within 6 months preferred)
• TNCC certification upon hire/transfer
• NRP certification within 30 days of hire/transfer
• CRRN certification preferred
