Battle Management Software Engineer

About the role
We are looking for a Battle Management Software Engineer who is passionate about pushing the boundaries of modern technology to advance our constellation management and visualization capabilities using AI agentic coding techniques. Your focus will be developing software components that enhance mission planning, system coordination, and real-time decision support. You will use AI-driven development workflows and modern distributed system design to enhance existing situational awareness capabilities and to integrate new battle management capabilities, which enable responsive, data-driven operations. You will have the unique experience of integrating your work with advanced simulation software and even seeing it in operation at York.
Responsibilities
- Design software architectures suitable for agentic development
- Evaluate, debug, and improve agent behavior, including monitoring output quality, ensuring reliability, and enforcing safety or coding standards
- Translate designs and requirements into high-quality, maintainable software that meets both functional and visual standards
- Build reusable code for components, shared libraries, and scalable services for use across the platform
- Engineer algorithms and business logic to promote scalability and automation
- Develop unit tests and documentation for internal users and customers
- Develop integration tests against simulation tools to validate behavior against realistic mission scenarios
- Participate in agile ceremonies including sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
- 3+ years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on frontend and web application development
- Experience working in Linux environments
- Experience with modern messaging frameworks and API technologies used in distributed systems
- Experience with Git in a collaborative, multi-contributor environment
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and drive code quality through reviews and design discussions
- Proven ability to collaborate across engineering, design, and operational stakeholders
- Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate ambiguous requirements independently and drive to resolution
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presenting technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
- Active security clearance or ability to obtain one
- Willingness to work full-time in our Laurel, MD office; this position does not support remote or hybrid work
Skills
- Strong proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, and Python building web-based user interfaces
- Experience building and configuring agentic AI systems that streamline software development lifecycles by accelerating development, automating routine code assembly, and enforcing strict structural guardrails
- Proficient designing systems that leverage LLM-driven agents, tool-calling, or multi-step orchestration
- Familiar with vehicle simulation tools and methodologies, including modeling spacecraft dynamics, guidance and control behaviors, and mission-specific scenarios
- Experience with container-based installation and deployment strategies, including Docker and CI/CD pipeline integration
- Familiar with modern security practices including API token management, CUI or classified information handling, and/or air-gapped environments
- Experience with WebGL or other canvas-based rendering for data-rich environments
