Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Operational
- Immediately act to stop any actions outside the risk management profile
- Function as a command team, together with their assigned Battalion Chief
- Serves as the Incident Safety Officer under the direction of the Incident Commander
- Provide incident scene reconnaissance using direct sight, GIS mapping and aerial technology
- Define, evaluate, challenge, and recommend changes to the Incident Action Plan
- Provide intelligence regarding tactical priorities, specific critical fire ground factors, and safety
- Evaluate the need for additional resources
- Assigned to on-scene incident logistics responsibilities
- Aid with the tactical worksheet for control and accountability
- Evaluate the fire ground organization and span of control
- When assigned to a Sector / Tactical level of operation, the Chief Officer and the BSO will function together to accomplish the tactical objectives
- Administrative
- Challenge the Status quo
- Find innovative solutions to be applied to present-day challenges
- Ensure that the City's Future Planning Thrusts (Objectives) drive the day-to-day operations of the shift
- Understand the importance of management perspective, personnel management, and leadership, documentation
- Collaborate with the Administrative Captain to develop, review, and revise Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for the successful training program
- Use KPI to evaluate training data and identify performance weaknesses and strengths
- Responsible for exposure reporting for fire operations and EMS incidents and tracking for shift
- Responsible for shift coordination of peer support, CISM, mental health, and wellness needs
- Collaborates with and serves as the field liaison to the EMS Coordinator to provide feedback and the needs of the shift for EMS services
- Complete root cause investigation of accidents and/or injuries within their assigned battalion
- Participates in the development of the department's strategic plan
- Point of contact for fleet and facility issues for field staff to ensure proper coordination with the Deputy Chief of Logistics and respective department
- Executes the maintenance and repair schedule as set by the Deputy Chief of Logistics and coordinates with the field crews the needs
- Facilitates after-action reviews (AAR) and analysis of significant incidents with the Battalion Chief
- Help develop and deliver Safety Training Topics (i.e., 6 Minutes for Safety)
- Works with staff across all the City's departments to enhance department data collection and analysis
- Facilitates the complete on-duty injury documentation
- Coordinates the Occupational Health return to work status paperwork with HR for respective staff
- Plans, organizes, evaluates and carries out specific projects that support the implementation of the Fire Department's goals and objectives
- Reviews, develops, and makes recommendations for policies and procedures for existing and newly developed programs
- Collaborates with other City departments to develop interdepartmental trainings relationships
- Responsible for NFIRS reporting and compliance for shift
- Conducts research and prepares reports as directed by the Chief Staff
- Collaborate with the Administrative Captain in the development and tracking of training programs
- Incorporate emergency scene observations into follow-up education modules and makes recommendation to the administrative Captain for training to the shift and across the department
