About the Role

To coach, direct, advise, and coordinate functions inherent to a specific interscholastic sport, extracurricular activity, or co-curricular activity. The role involves independent work in assigned settings while adhering to all laws, Board Policies, regulations, rules, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain effective cooperation and communication with the building principal or designee, school district administration, the School Board, the Director of Athletics and Activities (DAA), and other relevant personnel.
  • Serve as a positive representative of the school district when communicating with internal and external publics.
  • Develop a positive rapport with coaching/directing/advising staff and student-participants, using ethical means to motivate them toward desired goals.
  • Maintain professional relations with game/event officials, student-participants, bus drivers, parents/guardians, opponents, spectators, and the news media.
  • Demonstrate self-control, poise, and serve as a role model for students and staff, fostering an atmosphere of respect.
  • Understand and apply principles of training, conditioning, and development for student-participants, adjusting activities to suit skill levels and teaching basic skills, fundamentals, and good citizenship/sportsmanship.
  • Comply with all pre-season checklist requirements (e.g., practice schedule, PIAA Physical/Parent Certificate, team rules, team roster) and submit accurate post-season forms.
  • Adhere to PIAA, school district, league, District XI, and other governing body rules, regulations, and policies, and attend mandatory meetings.
  • Attend and participate in meetings, assembly programs, pep rallies, recognition events, and banquets.
  • Perform evaluations of team/activity performance, student-participants, and assistant coaches/directors/advisors.
  • Seek self-improvement and program enhancement through clinics, conferences, and professional development activities.
  • Organize the program, including pre-season, in-season, and post-season activities, practice/rehearsal sessions, and leadership for youth sports/activity programs.
  • Plan assignments, delegate authority, and ensure accountability for delegated tasks.
  • Assist student-participants with post-high school goals, college selections, and scholarship availability, adhering to NCAA and other governing body policies.
  • Ensure student-participants are aware of school district policies regulating practices and behavior.
  • Teach and enforce safety protocols, handle injuries properly, and complete applicable paperwork.
  • Submit reasonable equipment requests, follow purchasing procedures, and oversee fundraising activities.
  • Ensure proper use, care, and storage of equipment, and maintain an inventory of supplies and uniforms.
  • Ensure proper use and security of facilities and supervise student-participants before, during, and after practices/games/events.
  • Submit all required reports and information to the Athletics and Activities Department.
  • Follow policies and procedures regarding volunteer coaches/directors/advisors.
  • Work necessary hours to effectively administer the position.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or designee.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Proven ability to work with coaches, student-participants, administration, staff, parents/guardians, and media.
  • Ability to organize and administer a program for applicable grade levels (e.g., K-3, K-6, 4-6, 7-12, 9-12, K-12).
  • Enthusiasm, sincerity, and ability to maintain perspective while teaching good citizenship/sportsmanship.
  • Ability to make sound decisions appropriate to circumstances.
  • Dependability, punctuality, flexibility, professional appearance, and time management skills.
  • Professional demeanor and courteousness toward students, staff, and the public.
  • Effective communication, judgment, planning, organizational, problem-solving, and human relations skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Thorough knowledge of the skills, techniques, procedures, and rules of the specific sport or activity.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR is preferred.
  • Adequate knowledge of applicable technology resources and individual computer/technology-related skills.
  • Evidence of professional growth and development by staying current with issues in the field.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods and walk as necessary.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, or reach above shoulder level.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ramps.
  • Ability to access all work areas and move about to perform necessary functions.
  • Ability to lift as required.
  • Ability to withstand changes in environmental conditions in the work area.
  • Ability to travel between school district buildings and other job-related locations.
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment relative to the position.
