Non-Exempt position responsible for coaching student-athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition while providing the best possible education for each student-athlete.
Responsibilities
- Develop drill and practice activities that teach and enhance individual/team skill development.
- Apply knowledge of sport rules and strategies.
- Assist in checking out, maintaining, and checking in equipment.
- Plan and enforce appropriate safety and health rules and regulations.
- Assist in supervision plans that ensure the safety and welfare of students at all times (locker rooms, trips, practices, etc.).
- Maintain confidentiality about students and others.
- Communicate professionally with players, parents, supervisors, peers, and spectators.
- Model and demonstrate activities and equipment used to develop basic skills or physical condition.
- Observe, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate remediation activities during practice and game conditions.
- Apply developmental stages of the game to the needs and ability levels of the team/players.
- Assimilate innovations and adapt to changes when applicable.
- Assist in teaching the fundamental philosophy for the activity or sport.
- Analyze and evaluate sports effectiveness.
- Assist in providing and enforcing training rules and expectations.
- Manage public relations with all audiences at all times.
- Support the philosophies of Derby Public Schools and Derby Middle Schools’ activities.
- Supervise students on out-of-town activities, including overnight stays and driving a district vehicle.
- Assist in developing and maintaining an inventory list of equipment.
- Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
- Stay abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
- Comply with legal and regulatory requirements of governmental agencies and Board of Education policies.
- Maintain proper communication with high school head coaches to ensure a 7-12 philosophy is implemented.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Building Level Activities Director, or appropriate administrator.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work long and irregular hours in noisy and crowded environments.
- Ability to handle both emotional and physical stress.
- Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.
- Comply with all district health and safety policies.
- For Cross Country: Must be able to jog or ride a bike at least five miles.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
- Physically move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
- Stoop, bend, and reach.
- Sit on a bus for extended periods.
- Carry and/or provide aid to an injured player.
- Coach in a variety of temperatures, humidity levels, and weather conditions.
- Demonstrate agility drills, stretching exercises, and sport-specific activities without fatiguing.
- List equipment necessary for the sport.
