BASE Special Needs Assistant
Summary
Aid students with significant support needs by providing specialized and individualized childcare, education, and recreational activities. Duties include supervising, guiding, and encouraging acceptable social behavior; performing daily routines such as getting to and from class and bus stops; assisting with medical needs including trachs, feeding tubes, and catheterization; sanitizing and cleaning the learning environment; and communicating with parents, staff, teachers, site director, and site leader.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and support students in before and after school settings.
- Assist students with significant support needs by supervising, guiding, and encouraging acceptable social behavior during crafts, art projects, games, and other activities.
- Record attendance and communicate with parents regarding student absences.
- Perform daily routines such as getting to and from class and bus stops, field trips, using toilets, diapering, feeding, and personal hygiene tasks.
- Provide assistance with medical needs including trachs, feeding tubes, catheterization, distributing and recording medication administration, and provide CPR and general First Aid when needed.
- Sanitize, disinfect, and clean the learning environment and general work area of all bodily fluids.
- Communicate with parents and other staff regarding child behavior or program information; create incident reports as needed; call parents to get authorization for an unauthorized adult to pick up the student from the program; check identification of adults picking up students; prepare snacks and clean the activity and kitchen areas after use; open and close the school building; and secure the school building at the end of the program by locking doors and turning off lights.
Education and Related Work Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with special needs students preferred.
Licenses, Registrations or Certifications
- Criminal background check required for hire.
- Post-offer physical examination required prior to commencement of job duties.
- CPR, First Aid, and Universal Precautions certifications required within 90 days after entering position.
- Medication administration training as needed.
- Universal Precautions training required within 3 months after entering position.
Salary Information
All Classified positions are paid on an hourly basis. Initial placement on Step 1 of the pay grade for the position. Employees can advance an additional 7 steps (maximum Step 8) based on their previous experience. Final hourly placement on the Classified Salary schedule is dependent on the Grade Level for the position being posted and employees' previous work experience.
