Barns to Bookshelves - Bringing Books Home
For Hank's Sake brings horses and children together through equine-assisted reading experiences, literacy kits, and themed learning stalls. Every child leaves with a book to own and a belief that their story matters.
About the role
This is a remote, online volunteer opportunity to support "Barns to Bookshelves - Bringing Books Home For Hank's Sake." Help give, share, and bring books home for children by participating in a flexible, all-day event.
Details
Children engage with four themed learning stalls, each anchored by a real horse whose life story teaches a character value:
- Hank The Horse® — Kindness & Love: "Be Kind. Be You. Have FUN!" Children learn the horsey handshake and discover Hank's rescue story. His HANK acronym — Happy, Adventurous, Noble, Kind — teaches children that their name and story matter.
- Let's Go JoJo — Friendship & Joy: "Read. Make Friends. Find JOY!" JoJo was injured on the track and needed others to heal. Children read aloud alongside a horse who embodies second chances.
- Res Judicata — Strength & Service: "Read Today. Lead Tomorrow. Be STRONG!" True strength is found in serving others.
- Hotcha Do It — Courage & Confidence: "Great Dreams Start Here. Be BRAVE!" Hotcha raced 34 times with one eye. His story teaches children that challenges do not define their limits.
Every child receives a Hank's Helpers Literacy Kit and a book to take home. The program brings equine-assisted learning to schools, libraries, and shelters.
