About the Role
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Barista, you are an integral member of the team at the heart of our Cafés. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by greeting them, answering questions, and connecting readers with the right beverages and café items. You also help maintain the café’s attractive presentation and ensure its efficient operation.
Responsibilities
- Unpack and stock deliveries, tidy the bakes case, and maintain the dining area.
- Operate registers quickly and professionally to provide excellent customer service.
- Use varied technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and programs, comfortably and efficiently.
- Develop merchandising skills to maintain café presentation and cleanliness.
- Run a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
- Support receiving, unpacking, and stocking deliveries accurately.
- Prepare food and drinks accurately using knowledge, recipe guides, and product spec sheets.
- Maintain café cleanliness through daily and weekly cleaning tasks.
- Follow First In First Out (FIFO) practices and correctly date products.
- Assist the bookfloor team when needed.
- Understand loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
- Build knowledge of café products (beverages, bakery, savory, and gifting) to maintain presentation and support sales.
- Share knowledge of promotions and new items with customers and colleagues.
- Make effective customization recommendations for food and beverages.
- Use café training tools and follow safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines.
Requirements
- Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
- Be flexible and responsive to store needs, including filling scheduling gaps (store hours are early mornings to late evenings, including weekends and most holidays).
- Approach work with positivity, energy, and reliability.
- Support and show kindness to colleagues.
- Be cheerful and helpful with customers.
- Demonstrate willingness to learn new skills and knowledge.
- Handle physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
