About the Role

The Bakery Department Manager ensures customers’ needs are met and exceeded through effective day-to-day management of operations and merchandising for the assigned department. This position oversees product and conditions, including preparation and display areas, back room, equipment, schematics, and inventory. The Manager provides leadership to department associates, trains and develops employees, and manages performance to optimize department goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customers with a remarkable shopping experience by demonstrating, training, and holding associates accountable for excellent customer service.
  • Achieve department financial goals (sales, profit and loss, projections, metrics, and analysis) by implementing best practices and optimization strategies.
  • Lead department staff with a focus on accountability and high-level business performance.
  • Develop department staff through annual appraisals, supervision reports, performance reviews, and employee surveys.
  • Implement visual merchandising plans, emphasizing “fresh” and innovative solutions.
  • Improve productivity, labor efficiencies, and the quality of the shopping experience.
  • Oversee schematic implementation, stocking standards, item-to-tag integrity, and back-room organization.
  • Manage product rotation, spoils, shrink, and markdowns.
  • Ensure department cleanliness and conditions, including sign and price integrity.
  • Manage bakery product preparation according to banner guidelines and fulfill special customer orders (e.g., special occasion cakes).
  • Train staff on department procedures, including food preparation, packaging, safety, and planning tools.
  • Order products using inventory systems, pre-orders, and promotion/seasonal planning.
  • Analyze and manage product performance to maximize sales and profitability.
  • Manage department inventory accuracy.
  • Contribute to overall store conditions, including safety, sanitation, and hazardous waste management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, and team-building skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and suggestive selling ability.
  • Strong organization, administration, and math skills.
  • Knowledge of department operations, financials, bakery products, food safety, and hazardous materials regulations.
  • Knowledge of baking and decorating techniques, visual merchandising, and professional bakery equipment.
  • Familiarity with applicable union contractual agreement language.

Qualifications

  • Education: One year of college (or equivalent knowledge through formal education, specialized training, or job experience).
  • Experience: Two years of Bakery Department experience or current Produce, Meat, or Center Store Department Manager role.
  • Availability to work a variety of required retail hours.
  • Physical requirements: Frequent standing and physical movement; ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

Pay

$30.82 per hour.
