About the role
Northgate Markets, founded in Anaheim, CA in 1980, operates 40+ stores across Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and the Inland Empire. Our stores offer a comprehensive supermarket experience with a strong emphasis on a large meat department, bakery, tortilleria, and prepared foods, complemented by a significant selection of domestic and imported Latin American grocery goods.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance and enforce grooming standards throughout the department.
- Enforce company dress regulations and ensure all personnel in the bakery department adhere to them.
- Communicate effectively with superiors and subordinates, and direct and supervise team members in the absence of the bakery manager.
- Perform all duties and job functions of an experienced baker or cake decorator.
- Assist in supervising and training other Bakery Department personnel.
- Notify the manager of personnel situations or policy violations affecting store performance, and take appropriate disciplinary action.
- Greet all customers and provide prompt and courteous service or assistance.
- Ensure adherence to company values and practices.
- Comply with local, state, and federal health and civil code regulations.
- Adhere to approved procedures for receiving product, price marking, and restocking to ensure quality, accuracy, and product rotation.
- Order and maintain inventory control to ensure freshness, product quality, and turnover for maximum sales.
- Prepare reports and follow opening and closing procedures.
- Control department expenses and utilize energy conservation practices.
- Assist in maintaining general housekeeping and sanitation standards.
- Report any maintenance or equipment issues to the department manager immediately.
- Control shrinkage and pilferage losses, and stay alert for suspicious customer behavior.
- Be able to hear, speak, and understand the spoken word to respond to pages, accommodate customer requests, and communicate effectively with coworkers and customers.
- Compose and write reports, memos, and customer display signs or sales suggestions.
- Be knowledgeable and familiar with the nature and duties of every staff position in the department, including procedures, policies, and operations.
Requirements
- High school education or equivalent.
- Basic bakery knowledge and computer skills (word, excel, outlook).
- At least 1 year of retail sales and management experience.
- Ability to relocate to a store within 20 miles from home.
- Health department training required.
- Managerial skills.
- Pass a pre-employment drug test if not subject to DOT drug and alcohol rules.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions
- Sit, stand, and use hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly lift up to 70 pounds.
- Occasional exposure to refrigerated frozen food storage areas with temperatures as low as 20 degrees Fahrenheit below zero.
- Frequent exposure to heated ovens and high temperatures.
- Occasional exposure to noise levels in the work environment.
- Occasional exposure to dust and chemical fumes from common household cleaning agents.
- Occasional exposure to allergens from flour, spices, powdered substances, meat products, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Occasional exposure to glass or plastic containers with liquid contents.
- Occasional exposure to security assistance requests, customer accidents, and other emergencies.
