Our passion for placing the customer at the center of everything we do is driving a transformational shift at Liberty Mutual. About the role

This role has a hybrid work schedule (2 days onsite) and is open to candidates based in Portsmouth, NH, Boston, MA, Plano, TX, Indianapolis, IN, and Columbus, OH. You must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or in the future.

You’ll work in Java and Spring Boot on event-driven microservices, own your services end-to-end from design through production support, and help modernize a platform moving from monoliths to microservices. The team builds and runs the backend services behind personal lines underwriting and pricing—the APIs and rules engines that evaluate customer information and produce risk decisions (Accept, Reject, or Pause).

As part of a mature Agile development team, you’ll analyze requirements, develop high-quality APIs, and ensure they adhere to best practices in design and security. You’ll also mentor junior team members, share knowledge, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and support event-driven microservices in Java and Spring Boot, including REST API design, versioning, and contract management.
  • Contribute to a large, versioned business rules library, extending underwriting and rating logic while preserving backward compatibility.
  • Own service quality end-to-end: unit and integration testing, static analysis, code review, production monitoring, and incident response.
  • Partner with product owners and domain experts to translate business requirements into technical designs.
  • Develop efficient, maintainable, defect-free source code that meets business requirements and team standards.
  • Collaborate on unit test cases, test scripts, and researching technical alternatives.
  • Conduct impact analysis and develop component designs.
  • Participate in the production of support documentation and gather requirements from stakeholders.
  • Work within an iterative development process to deliver high-quality products.
  • Participate in medium-level design activities and provide functional/system integration testing support.
  • Perform quality assurance coding reviews and resolve discrepancies in requirements.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and identify improvement opportunities (performance tuning, automation, usability).
  • Complete other assigned project work or tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience (technical degree preferred).
  • Minimum 3+ years of Backend Engineering experience.
  • Experience working in an Agile environment (Scrum, Kanban, or XP).
  • Demonstrated success in platform modernization initiatives using REST, microservices, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and Java, NodeJS, or Spring Boot.
  • Ability to code in multiple languages, including an object-oriented language (preferably Java/J2EE).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with a knack for explaining technical decisions to non-engineers.
  • Collaborative, adaptable working style with demonstrated initiative and ability to prioritize.
  • Thorough grasp of technology concepts, business operations, design and development tools, system architecture, and technical standards.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and DevOps tools.

Preferred Skills

  • Event-driven architecture experience (Kafka or similar pub/sub patterns).
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS or Azure).
  • Observability and monitoring tooling (DataDog, Splunk).
  • Insurance, fintech, or other regulated-domain experience.
  • Rules engines or domain-specific languages.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tooling (e.g., GitHub Copilot).
  • Contract testing (Pact) or other advanced QA practices.
