Babbitt Technician

Responsibilities

• Works from routings, drawings, process sheets, setup sheets, and verbal instructions.
• Follows babbitting standard operating procedures (SOP) that may include cleaning and acid washing of components, dipping or coating components in molten tin, adding babbitt to components utilizing a spinning method, and/or static pouring of babbitt onto components.
• Maintains a clean and orderly work area to 5S standards.
• Performs work assignments in a safe manner.
• Employees must wear protective eye wear either tight fitting chemical goggles or face shields and insulated gloves.
• Fills out in-process inspection reports, as required.
• Notifies supervisor of damaged material and/or any discrepancies.
• Disassembles bearings, as required.
• Determines areas that need to be repaired.
• Inspects own work making sure tolerances and finishes are as prescribed.
• Reassembles bearings, as required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 5-10 years of related experience.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
• Ability to set-up manual machines.

Skills and Abilities

• Experience machining finish-grade components to tight tolerances.
• TIG and/or welding experience.
• Experience with ultrasonic testing and dye penetrate testing.
• General bearing knowledge.
• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
• Ability to review blueprints or other instructions to determine operational methods or sequences.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly required to stand.
• Frequently walks; uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reaches with hands and arms.
• Occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls.
• Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 30 pounds.
• Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts.
• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme heat.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
