Babbitt Technician
Responsibilities
- Works from routings, drawings, process sheets, setup sheets, and verbal instructions.
- Follows babbitting standard operating procedures (SOP) that may include cleaning and acid washing of components, dipping or coating components in molten tin, adding babbitt to components utilizing a spinning method, and/or static pouring of babbitt onto components.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area to 5S standards.
- Performs work assignments in a safe manner.
- Employees must wear protective eye wear either tight fitting chemical goggles or face shields and insulated gloves.
- Fills out in-process inspection reports, as required.
- Notifies supervisor of damaged material and/or any discrepancies.
- Disassembles bearings, as required.
- Determines areas that need to be repaired.
- Inspects own work making sure tolerances and finishes are as prescribed.
- Reassembles bearings, as required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 5-10 years of related experience.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Ability to set-up manual machines.
Skills and Abilities
- Experience machining finish-grade components to tight tolerances.
- TIG and/or welding experience.
- Experience with ultrasonic testing and dye penetrate testing.
- General bearing knowledge.
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Ability to review blueprints or other instructions to determine operational methods or sequences.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to stand.
- Frequently walks; uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reaches with hands and arms.
- Occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls.
- Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 30 pounds.
- Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts.
- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme heat.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
