AY27 - Computer Information Science Instructor

Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC), a two-year community college in the San Fernando Valley and part of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), serves over 20,000 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. LAVC offers more than 200 credit and noncredit programs, including 29 associate degrees for transfer, one bachelor's degree, and short-term certificates. About the Department

The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at LAVC consists of two full-time faculty members and approximately 12 adjunct faculty. The department offers industry-aligned curriculum with specialties in cybersecurity and programming, and is committed to student success.

Responsibilities

• Teach the regular load of computer information systems courses, including day, evening, and/or weekend classes in-person, hybrid, or online, and hold regular office hours.
• Plan, develop, and implement course curricula, and update course materials and outlines of record.
• Contribute to the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
• Demonstrate cultural responsiveness in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
• Complete and submit required documents in a timely manner.
• Participate in mandated projects, such as Program Review, and in department and campus committees and activities.
• Engage in professional development and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.
• Perform other academic duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR
• Associate’s degree and six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR
• The equivalent.
• Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Qualifications

• Advanced education beyond the minimum required, research experience, and an excellent academic record in computer information systems.
• At least four years of work experience in computer programming, script writing, server-side coding, cloud computing, cyber and cloud security, information compliance, or data analytics.
• Industry-recognized cybersecurity certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+, SSCP, GSEC, CEH, GCIH, CISA, CISM, CISSP).
• Experience teaching computer information systems in a community college or other college setting.
• Experience or interest in web enhancing and/or teaching online courses, and ability to use technology.
• Ability to set specific learning outcomes and objectives and measure achieved results.
• Commitment to a career in a diverse, student-centered department and college.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of equity-centered educational research on best practices to support the success of Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and other students of color.
• Ability to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students, including those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.
• Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with industry to support workforce development, internships, apprenticeships, advisory board engagement, and student employment opportunities.
• Grant writing and project implementation experience.
• Success at initiating, executing, and following up on projects in a timely manner.
• Commitment to maintaining current knowledge of recent developments in computer information systems.
• Commitment to execute extracurricular responsibilities within the department and college.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various academic departments and service areas at the college.

General Requirements

• A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense prior to employment.
• All students and employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have an approved exemption, as per LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900.

Pay

The starting salary range is $76,960 - $143,000 for the ten-month academic year, depending on education and experience. A Ph.D. differential of $4,870 per academic year is available.
