About the Role

At Nationwide, the Office of Corporate Strategy exists to help executive leadership across our businesses—Property Casualty, Financial Services, and Corporate Development—approach strategic decision-making to determine how to create the most value for the company in a way that supports Nationwide’s mission and vision. As an Associate Vice President, you’ll advise and guide Nationwide executives through the industry’s most critical challenges, offering a management consulting experience without the travel. You’ll directly engage senior leaders on projects spanning the full breadth of our business portfolio, driving meaningful and positive change.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business leaders to identify, evaluate, and pursue strategic opportunities, ranging from organic growth to new business line development to operating model redesign.
  • Manage strategic projects for the Office of the CEO (OCEO), Management Committee, or business leadership teams to successfully realize opportunities, determining where we will play, how we will win, and what decisions or trade-offs we must make.
  • Organize, facilitate, and lead project teams of relevant partners from across Nationwide’s corporate and business unit functions to drive business results.
  • Advise and oversee the corporate or business-level strategic planning process, producing a three-year corporate and/or business unit strategic plan tied to financial implications.
  • Establish and implement mechanisms to translate strategic plans into business unit operational plans.
  • Interpret financial, statistical, and other data to monitor the impact and efficacy of Nationwide’s defined strategies.
  • Lead all aspects of the consultation, preparation, and communication of evaluation findings and recommendations to all levels of management, including the Board of Directors, OCEO, Strategy leadership team, and business leadership teams.
  • Establish and maintain external relationships with industry experts and vision leaders to facilitate internal innovation and strategic thinking.
  • Engage in continuous improvement of the department, self, and others by developing associates in problem-solving, communication skills, and other areas of thought leadership, collaboration, and professional expertise.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated academic success; MBA or equivalent is preferred.
  • Confirmed knowledge of strategic planning, project management tools, concepts, and methodologies.
  • Significant leadership experience with strategic projects, from either a top-tier consulting firm or a Fortune 100 strategic planning group.
  • Proven ability to maximize business and industry knowledge; solid understanding of the insurance industry is a plus.

Skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to structure problems, identify core issues, articulate problem statements, lead problem-solving discussions, and separate issues into discrete work streams that result in solutions.
  • Skilled in clearly communicating thoughts, ideas, and concepts both verbally in individual and group settings and in writing.
  • Ability to provide impactful advice/solutions and build effective partnerships with business partners to ensure priorities are aligned.
  • Strength in utilizing approaches/tools customary to strategy professionals and demonstrates key areas of effective project management such as scope definition, time management, cost analysis, human resources management, and risk assessment and management.
  • Able to work and handle large, complex projects.
  • Ability to lead and develop engaged, high-performing project teams.
  • Regularly and consistently demonstrates Nationwide’s values.

This position reports to the Vice President, Strategic Planning and may lead a team of two to 15 associates. Staffing exceptions must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.

Schedule

  • Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not Eligible for Overtime).
  • Normal office environment with some travel required.

Pay

The national salary range for this role is $175,000.00–$326,000.00. The expected starting salary range is $175,000.00–$291,000.00. Placement within the range will be determined by factors including skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope, complexity, and location of the role, as well as market conditions. If applicable, sales incentives based on performance goals may be available in addition to this range.
