About the Role

Oversees all aspects of the credit union’s consumer lending function. Recommends changes to consumer lending policy and procedures, suggests new products and programs, and ensures an exceptional member experience through all consumer lending channels. Responsible for direct supervision of the Consumer Lending Manager and Indirect Lending Representative, as well as the sales, origination, and underwriting of consumer loans throughout the credit union.

Responsibilities

  • Meet credit union-wide assigned sales and service goals for consumer lending.
  • Drive the growth and performance of the credit union’s consumer lending and credit card portfolios.
  • Collaborate with Marketing on consumer lending and credit card promotions to increase credit card utilization, interchange, and consumer loan growth.
  • Analyze current portfolio performance, industry, and economic changes to project desired outcomes and present strategies to achieve them.
  • Work closely with the Indirect Lending Representative, Auto Dealers, Consumer Lending Manager, and AVP of Loan Servicing for approving, tracking, and processing indirect loans.
  • Supervise underwriting, originations, and asset quality for each consumer loan portfolio to achieve credit union growth and production goals.
  • Research, recommend, and implement changes related to consumer loan policy, procedures, product development, interest rates, member experience, and promotional strategies.
  • Proactively present new lending strategies to Senior Management and update Executive Leadership and the Board as assigned.
  • Remain knowledgeable on all laws and regulations applicable to consumer loan origination, including researching and recommending process changes to ensure compliance.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on consumer lending, providing updates at senior leader meetings, manager meetings, and conducting periodic branch visits.
  • Train and coach credit union personnel in lending policy, procedure, methodology, philosophy, and loan sales, including performance for consumer loan originations through branch, call center, dealerships, and digital channels.
  • Occasionally host and present to members of the community on Consumer Lending.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and schedule staff to meet the consumer lending needs of the credit union.
  • Prepare the annual budget for related activities within areas of responsibility.
  • Research industry and market trends to uncover opportunities for improving consumer lending operations, including emerging technology, peer credit union relationships, and optimization of current vendor solutions.
  • Prepare strategic recommendations to keep consumer lending relevant both digitally and physically.
  • Complete monthly and quarterly reports for Senior Management, including assigned credit union and centralized lending performance ratios to improve underwriting, processing, and profitability.
  • Approve consumer loans within assigned loan authority.
  • Work closely with the AVP of Member Solutions to identify areas of opportunity to improve asset quality and maintain acceptable credit risk.
  • Monitor credit union, automated underwriting, and individual loan officer ratios for acceptable credit risk levels and provide updates to Senior Management as needed.
  • Maintain oversight of the credit union’s consumer loan workout program and lead the Loan Workout Committee.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively coach Core Sales Training skills and action steps to achieve sales goals.
  • Complete monthly coaching for department staff on reaching assigned sales and service goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Consumer Lending Manager and Indirect Lending Representative, including overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these positions.
  • Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws, including training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Performance Standards

  • Ensure compliance of loan documentation with credit union policy and legal requirements.
  • Complete assigned projects, reports, and employee performance reviews on time.
  • Maintain acceptable performance ratios across all consumer lending portfolios.
  • Meet loan growth and sales goals within specified ranges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or a related field from an accredited university preferred, plus a minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated successful progression within a comparable, senior-level position, including supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lead and supervise others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos, and to write professional correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees, members, vendors, and others involved in service delivery.
  • Proficiency in basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, as well as interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations, as well as occasional situations with limited standardization.
  • Complete working familiarity with the credit union's computer system, including input/output functions, general ledger account knowledge, assigning security codes, balancing daily work, and training personnel.
  • Working knowledge of credit union products and services, including savings accounts, certificates of deposit, IRA programs, share draft programs, ATM services, audio telephone, Visa cash advance procedures, bill payment, direct deposit, and payroll deduction.
  • Knowledge of the credit union system, its structure, common language, acronyms, philosophy, and mission statement.
  • Annually complete and achieve passing scores on various SAFE FCU Policy, Procedure, Development, and Enhancement Curriculum.

Regulatory Requirements

This position requires compliance with specific procedures related to the Privacy Act, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and Bank Secrecy/Patriot Act. Annual training will be provided to keep you current on any changes to these policies/procedures. Failure to comply may result in termination and possible monetary penalties from federal regulatory agencies.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to sit.
  • Occasionally required to stand and walk.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Mental Demands

  • Occasional need to be persuasive and use good judgment.
