Primary Purpose

The AVID Teacher is responsible for delivering the AVID elective curriculum and supporting students in developing the academic, organizational, and college-readiness skills necessary for postsecondary success. This role includes managing a student caseload, implementing AVID instructional strategies (WICOR: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading), and fostering a college-going culture. The AVID Teacher will also support student progress through academic monitoring, mentorship, and coordination of college and career readiness activities.

Qualifications

  • Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or universityTeaching Certification preferred but not requiredAVID training (or willingness to attend AVID Summer Institute and ongoing professional development) required
  • Experience: Experience working with secondary students (middle or high school)Experience supporting college readiness, academic intervention, or student success initiativesBilingual English/Spanish, a plus
  • Knowledge And Skills: Knowledge of AVID methodologies, including WICOR strategiesAbility to implement student-centered, inquiry-based instructional practicesStrong relationship-building and mentorship skillsKnowledge of college and career readiness processes, including applications, financial aid, and postsecondary planningAbility to analyze student data and monitor academic progressStrong organizational and case management skillsKnowledge of culturally responsive teaching practicesProficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office and student information systems

Functions & Responsibilities

  • Instructional Responsibilities: Deliver AVID elective curriculum with fidelityImplement AVID instructional strategies (WICOR) across lessonsFacilitate AVID tutorials and collaborative learning structuresSupport development of student skills in note-taking, organization, critical thinking, and academic writingCreate a college-going classroom culture through visible systems, routines, and expectations
  • Case Management: Manage a caseload of AVID studentsMonitor student academic progress, including grades, attendance, and engagementConduct regular student check-ins and goal-setting conferencesMaintain accurate student records and documentationCommunicate regularly with families regarding student progress
  • College And Career Readiness: Guide students through college and career exploration activitiesSupport completion of college applications, FAFSA/TASFA, and scholarshipsOrganize and facilitate college visits and guest speakersPromote awareness of postsecondary opportunities (college, career, military, workforce)
  • Schoolwide Performance Support campus goals related to attendance, persistence, and graduationCollaborate with teachers to embed AVID strategies across content areasParticipate in campus initiatives that promote student achievement and college readinessAssist with recruitment and retention of AVID students

AVID Program Responsibilities

  • Attend AVID Summer Institute and required AVID professional learningParticipate in AVID site team meetings and program implementation effortsMaintain AVID certification and program fidelity requirementsSupport campus-wide AVID initiatives and strategy integration

Other Duties

  • Participate in campus meetings, professional development, and required trainingsSupport school events, student activities, and family engagement effortsAssist with mentoring or supporting staff implementing AVID strategiesOther duties as assigned

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; move throughout the room and/or facility; communicate verbally and electronically; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; kneel, stoop, crouch, and/or crawl; and climb or balance. Regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Equipment Used Computer and printer, telephone, calculator, copy machine

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to maintain emotional control under stress. Occasionally required to travel to facilities within the district. May be required to work after school and weekends.
