Automotive Worker (Helper).

This position is located within the Mobile Assets Branch/Garage, Asset and Logistics Management Division, under the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC). The primary purpose is to assist in the maintenance, operation, utilization, and disposal of the fleet of government-owned automotive, marine, and other mobile equipment assets that support administrative, training, security, and maintenance activities.

Responsibilities

• Perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort and the use of common hand and power tools, as well as other automotive and marine maintenance shop equipment and systems.
• Accomplish minor maintenance services, including checking, adjusting, and changing crankcase, differential, and transmission lubricants; checking and adjusting fluid levels in brakes, batteries, radiators, and power steering reservoirs.
• Test, replace, or service batteries; replace oil, fuel, and air filters; install or replace accessories; replace or adjust drive belts.
• Locate leaks and tighten fasteners to manufacturer’s specifications; replace and tighten hose connections; replace windshield wiper blades, light bulbs, and fuses.
• Inspect tire conditions, adjust air pressure, and perform tasks such as rotating, mounting, dismounting, repairing, and balancing tube and tubeless tires using tire mounting and balancing machines.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen to apply for this position.
• Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Must successfully pass a background investigation.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Universal United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for handling refrigerants within 180 days of employment.
• Must be able to obtain certification to operate a forklift and meet the physical fitness requirements to do so safely.
• This position is Emergency Essential and required to sustain FLETC’s operations under all conditions.
• Must meet job-related medical and/or fitness standards; subject to a pre-appointment and annual physical examination.
• Overtime may be required.
• Occasional travel may be required.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to conduct official government business.
• Must adhere to a drug-free workplace policy; random and other drug testing may be required for safety- or security-sensitive positions.

Qualifications

While there is no minimum amount of training or experience required, applicants must demonstrate experience—military or civilian, paid or unpaid—of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Experience must include:

Physical Demands

• Work requires long periods of standing, walking, and handling heavy objects.
• Frequently bends, reaches, and works in awkward positions, including work in lube pits or from racks.
• Regularly lifts up to 65 pounds; occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing 70 pounds or more with assistance or lifting devices.

Work Environment

• Work is performed inside and outside; inside work areas are generally dirty, oily, and greasy.
• Outside work exposes the position to various weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain, snow, or icy conditions.
• Constant exposure to minor cuts, bruises, and burns; adherence to safety procedures and use of safety equipment may be required.
