Automotive Regulatory Counsel

About the role

HATCI legal is a tight-knit group of attorneys and support professionals that is growing. The team is looking for an automotive regulatory attorney who is an excellent communicator, team player, detail-oriented, willing to learn, self-motivated, confident, and interested in helping create a happy, healthy, and productive work environment. The successful candidate will work with legal, supporting the regulation/certification/compliance department and various engineering departments.

The ideal candidate must possess planning and organizational skills, the ability to adapt to changing priorities, be deadline-driven, have sound judgment and decision-making skills, be able to effectively handle sensitive and confidential information, work well under pressure, and be a multitasker. This role will report directly to the General Counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance to engineering, product, EHS, and management teams on regulatory requirements, reporting obligations, and risk mitigation.
  • Advise management on material regulatory risks, opportunities, and compliance strategies.
  • Work with homologation/certification, engineering, and product teams to align development with regulatory standards.
  • Address regulatory challenges for autonomous vehicles, cybersecurity, and data privacy.
  • Advise on and directly support regulatory investigations and inquiries in all markets, interactions with regulators, and other reporting obligations.
  • Advise on newly enacted laws relating to the automotive landscape, as well as shape proactive internal policy regarding ICE, electric, and/or autonomous vehicles.
  • Make recommendations on legal problems and determine when a legal matter requires consultation or coordination with HATCI and/or Hyundai leadership, regulators, RHQs, and/or outside counsel.

Requirements

Educational Requirements: Juris Doctor

Related Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in private practice or in-house at an automotive OEM, focusing on automotive regulatory compliance

  • NHTSA, EPA, CARB regulations
  • Government investigation processes
  • Regulation implementation and compliance

Additional Preferred Certifications: Member of state bar (Michigan preferred)
