About the role
The role involves performing repairs requiring a high level of skill to diesel and gasoline powered automotive equipment such as bulldozers, loaders, and heavy trucks.
Responsibilities
- Performs skilled operations in repairing and overhauling diesel and large displacement gasoline powered motor equipment including trucks, tractors, loaders, bulldozers, and power shovel type equipment.
- Repairs and replaces oil and fuel pumps, alternators, fuel injectors, superchargers, turbo chargers, and water pumps.
- Replaces engine block cylinder liners.
- Installs replacement main bearing and crankshafts.
- Adjusts connecting rods and bearings.
- Diagnoses trouble and repairs or overhauls brakes, transmissions, clutches, electrical and hydraulic systems, front and rear axles.
- Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic problems.
- Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels.
- Maintains sand spreaders, snow blowers, arch welders, portable compressors, and other power equipment.
- Drives a repair truck to reach disabled vehicles.
- Mounts and dismounts snowplow blades and other auxiliary equipment.
- May use an arc welder or acetylene torch to make repairs.
- May instruct others in diesel engine servicing procedures.
- May operate motor equipment for road maintenance.
Qualifications
- EITHER: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college with an Associate's Degree in diesel technology, diesel mechanics, diesel and heavy equipment mechanics, diesel and industrial engine mechanics, diesel mechanics technology, or related field AND 1 year of experience involving the repair and maintenance of automotive diesel equipment;
- OR Three (3) years of experience as outlined in (A) above;
- OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined in (A) and (B) above.
- Note: Successful completion of a one-year training course in diesel engine repair or diesel mechanics from a technical training institute may be substituted for 1 year of the required experience described above.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) at time of appointment.
- Certification by New York State DMV to conduct Heavy Vehicle Inspections at time of appointment.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
- Good knowledge of diesel and large displacement gasoline engines and methods associated with their maintenance.
- Skill to demonstrate ability to make repairs to diesel power plants.
- Good knowledge of terminology, tools, and safety precautions associated with automotive maintenance.
- Working knowledge of machine shop procedures.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic defects in equipment.
- Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches or oral instructions.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and in accordance with vehicle and traffic laws.
- Manual dexterity.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Physical condition equal to the demands of the position.
