About the role

As an Automotive/Diesel Mechanic at the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), you'll be part of a supportive team that takes great pride in ensuring equipment is on the road to help support travel throughout the State of Nebraska.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and process new vehicles and equipment for acceptance by NDOT Fleet Management.
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures on all types of equipment owned by NDOT.
  • Diagnose and repair problems in electrical/computerized systems found on vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair problems in computerized fuel systems on both gasoline and diesel equipment.
  • Perform minor and major repairs on all types of gasoline/diesel equipment.
  • Perform diagnostics and repair transmissions, final drives, and hydraulic systems.
  • Rewire electrical systems and perform metal fabrications and major repairs on snowplows and trucks, including extensive welding.
  • Disassemble units, inspect parts for wear, repair, overhaul, and replace parts using precision measuring instruments.
  • Perform diagnostics and repairs on equipment breakdowns in the field.
  • Purchase parts and obtain bids for parts needed to repair engines.
  • Maintain accurate computer and manual records of time and materials expended.
  • Operate tandem axle trucks and other heavy equipment during new equipment check-in process.
  • Test drive vehicles to identify problems and verify repairs.
  • Perform welding projects using metal shear, press brake, all types of welders, and other shop equipment as assigned.
  • Responsible for getting bids and ordering fuel (E85 & Gasohol), including keeping a daily log and filling out proper paperwork.
  • Safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload various equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous materials or objects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Practical work experience performing automotive/diesel maintenance and repair, including use of computerized diagnostic instruments and equipment OR post-high school vocational or technical coursework in automotive/diesel mechanics, including instruction in computerized diagnostic equipment and in automotive/diesel mechanical maintenance and repair practices, equipment, and technologies.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program (department covers permit costs).
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Ability to lift and handle, manually or through mechanical means, heavy materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and be self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in diesel technology with 5 years of experience in the repair of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.

Skills

  • Two years of practical experience in the maintenance, repair, and service of diesel and gas-powered equipment.
  • Working knowledge of welding and fabrication.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to diagnose, anticipate malfunctions, and troubleshoot problems in gas- and diesel-powered equipment using hand tools, diagnostic testing equipment, and verbal descriptions.
