Automotive Facilities Inspector

About the Role

An Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee investigates and resolves consumer complaints involving automotive services and periodically inspects service providers for licensure compliance. Candidates will work in one or more counties within the assigned region.

Responsibilities

• Obtain information concerning consumer complaints by reviewing complaint files, interviewing complainants, and soliciting third-party information.
• Obtain and evaluate the respondent’s version of disputed events.
• Examine vehicles and components to determine the nature, extent, and necessity of work performed using appropriate test equipment and disassembling portions of vehicles.
• Review invoices, bills of sale, purchase orders, and related documents to verify compliance with written estimates and work orders.
• Act as a mediator between consumers and automotive facilities when no illegality is found.
• Gather, label, and prepare evidence for administrative or legal proceedings.
• Prepare narrative case reports of findings and recommend appropriate actions.
• Testify at administrative hearings and may recommend restitution to the hearing officer.
• Serve as an expert witness in court proceedings when required.
• Conduct original inspections and periodic program audits of licensed or regulated automotive facilities to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Requirements

To be eligible for appointment, candidates must meet one of the following conditions:

• NY HELPS:
  • Automotive Facilities Inspector, G-16: Five years of experience as an automotive mechanic, automotive diagnostician, or automotive technician instructor, including diagnosis and repair of On-Board Diagnostic 2 (OBD2) Systems.
  • Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee 2, G-NS (Equated to G-15): Four years of experience as described above.
  • Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee 1, G-NS (Equated to G-14): Three years of experience as described above.
• Transfer: One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service allocated to a G-12 or higher eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 or 70.1 of the Civil Service Law (cannot be a second consecutive transfer advancing more than two salary grades).
• Reinstatement: Previous service in this title or a transferable title may qualify for reinstatement under Civil Service Law.
• 55b/c Appointment: Candidates with 55b/c eligibility are encouraged to apply and must possess the minimum qualifications and a current 55b/c eligibility letter.

Locations

• Region 1: Suffolk and Nassau counties.
• Region 6: Kings, Queens, and Richmond counties.

Language proficiency in Chinese, Creole, Italian, Korean, Russian, or Spanish may be required for certain positions.
