Positions are available in the General Services/Transportation department at Porterville Developmental Center. Incumbents operate and maintain delivery trucks and any vehicle required for transportation duties as scheduled by the Automotive Pool Manager or designee.

Effective July 1, 2025, State employees are subject to a 3% salary reduction in exchange for 5 hours per month of Personal Leave. Temporary state housing may be available for those relocating to fill hard-to-recruit positions, with assignments and rates determined by Department policy and labor agreements.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment, including future vacancies. Pursuant to California Government Code, candidates must be residents of California at the time of appointment. This position requires lawful authorization to work in the United States, and the Department does not sponsor employment visas.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain delivery trucks and other vehicles as assigned by the Automotive Pool Manager.
  • Perform duties related to the transportation department, including loading and unloading heavy items.
  • Interact with clients, personnel, and the general public.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: Must possess sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform duties. Includes moving, loading, and unloading heavy items, as well as sitting, lifting, pulling, pushing, bending, and stooping.
  • Typical Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and conditions common to a clinical environment. Work may occur in extreme weather conditions.

Requirements

  • Pass the Department of State Hospitals' Automotive Equipment Operator I examination.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license for operating:
    • Buses designed to carry more than 15 passengers.
    • Single vehicles with three or more axles.
    • Any such vehicle towing another vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds gross.
  • Pass a drug screening, background investigation, and medical clearance prior to hiring.
  • Complete a medical evaluation as part of the hiring process.
  • Submit a completed standard state application (STD. 678) and a copy of the required driver’s license by the final filing date.

Pay

$4,111.00 - $4,910.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable.

Schedule

Permanent, full-time position. In-office work required (no telework).

Location: Tulare County, Porterville Developmental Center.
