Automation Engineering Co-op

About the role

This position is a learning opportunity for an individual pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or Computer Science. Under the direction of an Automation Engineer, the co-op will gain hands-on experience by providing technical support to engineering and assisting in the development and commissioning of industrial automation systems. This is an 8-month co-op position with two possible start dates: January through August or May through December. Candidates must commit to the full 8-month term for their selected timeline.

Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, program, and implement methods of control and automation to improve operations, minimize operating costs, maximize efficiency, and enhance labor and material utilization.
• Support the commissioning and validation of automated process and machine control systems.
• Investigate and analyze manufacturing processes for automation potential.
• Research and identify appropriate equipment for automation in manufacturing and product finishing.
• Conceptualize, plan, design, and execute Capital Projects related to Industrial Automation, Process Controls, and Electrical Distribution.
• Support the design and maintenance of OT networks and related SCADA software.
• Perform control system design and programming, control panel design and assembly, and development of Bill of Material (BOM).
• Program Rockwell PLC & HMI systems and design communication networks.
• Create system documentation and manuals.
• Assist with GMP documentation and engineering project tasks as required.
• Comply with ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements applicable to the business.
• Demonstrate inclusion, accountability for a safe workspace, and adherence to Promega’s 6 Emotional & Social Intelligence (ESI) core principles.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of instruction toward a BS in Engineering (Electrical, Automation, or Computer Science preferred).
• Base electrical circuit and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent organization, communication, and presentation skills.
• Self-driven with a track record of initiative.
• Ability to manage multiple and changing priorities.
• Some CAD training (AutoCAD preferred).
• Proficiency in digital tools and technology, including Microsoft applications and mobile platforms, with adaptability to emerging technologies like AI.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Rockwell PLC & HMI programming.
• Knowledge of motion control via Servo or VFD.
• OT network experience.
• Junior or senior status toward a BS in Electrical Engineering.

Physical Demands

• Ability to observe and inspect equipment for proper operation and compliance with safety and housekeeping standards.
• Work in a production environment around automated equipment, as well as in office and lab settings with chemical, biological, and packaging materials.
• Remain stationary for extended periods and position oneself in low positions.
• Move objects up to 20 pounds and transport items between buildings.
