Automation Engineer Intern, CMC

About the role
As part of the Chemistry Operations team, you will support day-to-day operations, continuous improvement initiatives, and capital projects. This role provides hands-on experience with automation principles, Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) hardware and software, as well as design, procurement, commissioning, qualification, and troubleshooting of equipment. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals.
This internship is designed as a learning opportunity for individuals pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation/Controls Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Under the guidance of an Automation/Controls Engineer, you will gain practical experience by completing automation projects to improve process workflows, increase operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with relevant standards and procedures. The internship lasts approximately three months, starting in May 2027 and ending in August 2027, with some flexibility regarding start and end dates.
Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, program, and implement methods of control and automation to improve operations, minimize operating costs, and maximize efficiency.
- Learn and utilize new technologies to assist with engineering and improvement projects.
- Participate in cross-functional teams to investigate and analyze automated processes and execute continuous improvement projects.
- Assist in troubleshooting and problem-solving activities related to manufacturing processes, equipment, and utility systems.
- Review and update controlled documents to reflect changes for projects or findings from investigation activities.
- Present project work and updates at various project team meetings.
- Demonstrate inclusion through words and actions, ensuring a safe workspace by acting with kindness, curiosity, and respect for others.

Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation/Controls Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Basic electrical circuit and problem-solving skills.
- Proven self-starter with a record of follow-through.
- Excellent organization, communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities.
- Strong safety mindset.
- Demonstrated proficiency in digital tools and technology, including Microsoft applications and mobile platforms, with the ability to adapt and leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, automation, and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior internship or co-op experience in an automation or controls engineering role.
- Basic knowledge of automation engineering principles and manufacturing equipment, with exposure to PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and instrumentation.
- Familiarity with Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) engineering software and tools (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View SE) used in automation design and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
- Strong interest in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
