Automation Engineer
About the Role
Under the general direction of the supervisor, this position provides application engineering and software program development for campus building automation systems (BAS), HVAC, and building service systems. The Automation Engineer coordinates with campus utilities staff to provide BAS engineering support for HVAC maintenance and projects, troubleshoots and services the BAS communications network, and collaborates with other engineering disciplines and external consultants to deliver complete engineering services. This role also establishes design and application practices that implement energy conservation and sustainable design while communicating effectively with staff, management, and the campus community.
Responsibilities
- Install, configure, service, troubleshoot, and repair building automation control systems, including pneumatic and electronic controls.
- Develop systems control programs from written sequences of operations.
- Apply working knowledge of Tridium and Niagara framework, as well as building automation system programming using block and/or line coding methodology.
- Understand the control and sequence of operations for building systems, such as chilled water systems, air handling and distribution equipment, steam and hot water equipment, and hot/chilled water distribution systems.
- Use test instrumentation (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, network sniffers) to analyze and troubleshoot systems.
- Analyze information to optimize the operation of HVAC and refrigeration equipment and provide recommendations.
- Troubleshoot network-related issues using familiarity with OSI model network layers.
- Modify sequences of operation and controller programs to accommodate building remodel projects.
- Apply knowledge of energy management and control strategies.
- Select, install, and calibrate meters and instrumentation.
- Read and interpret schematic drawings.
- Ensure compliance with UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements, and report discrepancies related to ADA and Fire/Life/Safety costs.
- Apply working knowledge of electronic circuitry and Ohm’s Law.
- Operate trade-related hand and power tools with operational-level proficiency.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in installation, configuration, service, troubleshooting, and repair of building automation control systems, including pneumatic and electronic controls. (Required)
- Niagara 4 Technical Certification. (Required)
- Valid California noncommercial Class C driver’s license. (Required)
- Completion of a satisfactory background investigation, Live Scan background check, and pre-placement physical. (Required)
- Subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" with continued employment contingent upon a satisfactory driving record. (Required)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building systems engineering, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered. (Preferred)
Pay
UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors such as budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, and certifications. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common.
