Automation & Controls Technician

About the role

As part of the Automation group, you will support the manufacturing of Medium and Low Voltage Cable by providing technical expertise in PC and PLC-based controls and automation for improvement projects and production support.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain PLC and HMI programs used by production and facilities to control manufacturing processes and support equipment.
• Provide controls and automation support for optical fiber manufacturing, including off-hours support on a rotating basis.
• Instruct, assist, and mentor members of the electrical team.
• Refine processes related to electrical safety and equipment efficiency throughout the facility.
• Inspect, repair, adjust, install, and maintain all electrical systems, including calibration of electronic instrumentation.
• Modify, rebuild, repair, or overhaul electronic and electrical equipment and controls.
• Apply electronics principles to diagnose equipment malfunctions and restore equipment to operation.
• Support the commissioning of new production equipment.
• Ensure proper backups of all programs and critical support files are maintained per plant standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor or management.

Requirements

• B.S. in Engineering or Computer Science, or Associate/Technical degree in Controls, Automation, or Mechatronics; or 5 years of hands-on experience.
• Excellent planning, communication, and organizational skills.
• Detail-oriented with proven analytical, problem identification, and resolution skills.
• Ability to contribute to a culture of continuous process improvements.
• Ability to work with little supervision.
• Compliance with all applicable safety procedures and ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 HSE guidelines.
• Demonstrated capability of achieving results through people, technology, and process.

Skills

• Experience working with highly automated systems or processes (manufacturing experience is a plus).
• Experience programming PLCs such as Rockwell (Allen-Bradley), Modicon, Siemens, or comparable platforms.
• Proficiency in PLC programming utilizing IEC languages including Ladder, Sequential Function Charts, Structured Text, and Function Block Diagrams.
• Experience with Profibus, Ethernet, and Modbus+ communication protocols.
• Experience programming SCADA software with PC-to-PLC and PC-to-Database transactions.
• Experience programming servo drives and motion controllers.
