About the role

As a Tech - Paint Prepper, you will support one or more Paint Technicians by preparing vehicles for painting and ensuring a high-quality finish.

Responsibilities

  • Wash vehicles, locate, and remove imperfections on panels, and treat scratches and chips with plastic or liquid filler.
  • Tape vehicles to ensure only intended parts are painted, and smooth rough spots.
  • Remove tape, clean the vehicle, and prepare it for buffing after painting.
  • Surface Preparation (60%):
    • Thoroughly inspect wheels for damage, cracks, bends, or other issues.
    • Evaluate the extent of damage to determine repair or refurbishment needs.
    • Inspect surfaces to be painted and assess their condition.
    • Remove dirt, dust, and contaminants using cleaning agents and solvents.
  • Sanding and Smoothing:
    • Sand surfaces to create a smooth texture for proper paint adhesion.
    • Repair minor imperfections such as dents or scratches.
  • Masking and Taping:
    • Apply masking tape or protective materials to areas that should not be painted.
    • Cover windows, trim, or other parts to shield them from paint.
  • Priming:
    • Apply primer to enhance paint adhesion and corrosion resistance.
    • Sand primed surfaces to achieve a smooth finish.
  • Quality Control and Service Excellence (30%):
    • Clean and maintain painting equipment, including spray guns and paint booths.
    • Follow safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Subject Matter Expertise (10%):
    • Maintain records of preparation processes, materials used, and defects encountered.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in wheel refurbishing or automotive repair is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in paint preparation, automotive refinishing, or a related field is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of painting and surface preparation techniques.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivation, and ability to work independently.
  • Physical stamina to frequently kneel, bend, squat, and lift up to 45 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions.

Physical Job Requirements

Pay

Starting compensation is expected to be $25.00 to $28.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, and geographic location.
