General Summary
The Authorization & Health Information Specialist position is under the direction of the Admitting and Health Information Manager. The primary responsibilities include verifying surgical authorizations, assisting with Performance Improvement projects, compiling statistical data, and insurance audits. Additionally, the position assists with reception and admission needs as necessary.
Essential Functions
- Verifies surgical authorizations according to established policies and procedures
- Compiles statistical data and assists with insurance audits
- Aids with reception and admission needs as necessary
- Fulfills all applicable laws and regulations regarding the release of information and the maintenance of medical records
- Prioritizes work assignments and completes tasks accurately and promptly
- Utilizes automated processes and clinical information systems appropriately and efficiently
- Applies concepts of age/developmental stages in interactions with patients and families
- Adheres to all Hospital Policies and Procedures, particularly Guidelines for Appropriate Conduct, Corporate Compliance, Diversity, and Confidentiality
- Identifies potential risks to patients and takes appropriate actions
- Demonstrates the hospital's philosophy, mission, and values through actions and practices
- Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel, and strategic issues
- Maintains positive working relationships and fosters a cooperative work environment
- Follows through on problems that may compromise effective job performance by using the appropriate chain of command
- Complies with National Patient Safety Goals, Universal Precautions, and infection control guidelines
- Performs other duties as required or assigned
Education and Experience
- High School or equivalent
- Surgical authorization experience is required

- Effective communication skills (both orally and written)
