Job Overview
About the role
The Food Safety auditor is responsible for conducting audits in facilities (and farms for SQF) in accordance with both the audit scheme and SCS protocol. Auditors travel to client sites, perform inspections, determine compliance, review corrective actions, and submit their audit reports for review and certification.
Responsibilities
- Audit Coordination: Schedule and confirm audit dates with clients, prepare and send audit plans according to protocols, book travel, hotel, and transportation according to company policy, and submit expense reports.
- Audit Services: Adhere to all quality and code of conduct standards, conduct audits using applicable checklists, forms, and tools, maintain positive client relationships, respond to all client inquiries and concerns, submit complete and accurate audit reports within established timelines, ensure thorough client records are maintained.
- Program Quality and Compliance: Attend trainings to maintain qualification to conduct audits, maintain training records, stay updated on applicable regulations and standards, prepare clients for the audit process by sending required audit plans.
Qualifications (Minimum Requirements Per Scheme Or QMS)
- SQF: University degree in a related food sector category, food science, food technology, or related discipline; 40-hour Lead Auditor training course; 2-day HACCP training course; 5-day SQF Lead Auditor training; 15 hours of continuing professional development; 5-years of full-time food industry experience in a food-related technical, professional, or supervisory role.
- BRC: University degree in a food-related or bioscience discipline, or as a minimum have successfully completed a higher education course in a food or bioscience-related discipline (a minimum of 10 years industry experience may be used in lieu of a 4-year degree with BRC approval); 5+ years of professional experience related to the food industry; 2-day HACCP training course; Lead Auditor course from a third party AND the BRC current food safety standard training course OR BRC Lead Auditor course with current standard training; 40-hour quality management system training.
Requirements
- Relevant Standards/Schemes: Familiarity with the third-party certification process; strong communication and customer service skills; well-developed organizational and time management skills; strong computer skills, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and database systems; willing to travel up to 75%, mostly overnight travel throughout the US and Canada.

Physical Requirements
- This is an office-based job 25% of the time and a field position 75% of the time. Must be able to sit 6+ hours per day. Keyboarding 6+ hours per day. Must be able to speak and listen in person and on the phone. Must be able to physically travel to audit sites via both plane and car. Travel to audit sites requires the ability to stand, walk and carry up to 20 lbs. of equipment, possibly on steep, rough terrain.
Work Environment
- Remote (home office based) and client sites across the US/Canada. While auditing/assessing: Processing equipment in facilities; Pesticide and other chemical storage facilities; Temperature extremes of high heat or cold.
