Position Duties
The Comptroller of Maryland’s Compliance Division is seeking new tax auditors for their Business Tax Audit and Individual Tax Audit teams. Positions offer flexible work schedules including telework options and fieldwork opportunities.
Business Tax Audit
- Audit business entities for compliance with Maryland’s revenue laws and regulations.
- Identify and assess unpaid taxes or fees owed by business entities.
- Conduct audits on-site and remotely, in-state, or out-of-state as needed.
- Receive on-the-job training and eventually perform audits independently.
Individual Tax Audit
- Audit individual and pass-through entity tax filings for accuracy and compliance with state and federal tax laws.
- Use specialized software and AI tools to verify cryptocurrency and crypto asset sources.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a combination of 30 credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including 3 credit hours in auditing.
- Experience: None required.
- For international degrees, proof of equivalent American education is required.
Desired Or Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with state and federal tax laws, rules, and regulations.
- Familiarity with generally accepted auditing standards and accounting principles.
- Certification as a CPA, CIA, CMA, or CGAP.
- Knowledge of accounting and auditing methods and systems.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience with Revenue Premier Enterprise, SMART, or CAMS software.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
