Auditor (FINANCIAL COMPLIANCE AUDITOR I)
This is a position specific recruitment for the Comptroller of Maryland’s Compliance Division. The resulting certified eligible list may be used to staff several current and future vacancies.
About the role
The Comptroller of Maryland’s Compliance Division is looking to add new tax auditors to their Business Tax Audit and Individual Tax Audit teams. We offer flexible work schedules that include telework options and opportunities to work from the field (outside of the office) for certain audit assignments.
Responsibilities
- Business Tax Audit: Audit business entities for compliance with the State of Maryland’s revenue laws and regulations. Identify and assess unpaid taxes or fees. Conduct audits on-site, remotely, in-state, or out-of-state as appropriate. Perform audits independently after on-the-job training.
- Individual Tax Audit: Perform complex income tax audits of individual and pass-through entity tax filings. Audit federal income tax returns to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with state and federal tax laws. Identify and verify sources of digital income, including cryptocurrencies and other crypto assets, using specialized software, AI tools, and open-source data.
Requirements
Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university or a Bachelor's degree with 30 credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by 3 credit hours in auditing.
Experience: One year of experience performing financial and compliance audits of a State agency, grantee, business, or other entity.
- Applicants who met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974, are considered to have met the educational requirement.
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or a Master's degree in accounting for one year of the required experience.
- Applicants may substitute one year of professional accounting experience for the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Internal Review classifications or Auditing specialty codes in the Financial or Auditing fields on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
For education obtained outside of the U.S., proof of equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service is required. A detailed, course-by-course evaluation report must be submitted from a NACES member.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional experience performing tax audits for a state or federal department of revenue.
- Professional experience preparing income or business tax returns.
- Professional experience performing financial compliance audits.
- Familiarity with state and federal tax laws, rules, and regulations.
- Familiarity with generally accepted auditing standards and accounting principles.
- Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP).
- Knowledge of accounting and auditing methods and systems, and legal, business, and accounting terminology.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Familiarity with Revenue Premier Enterprise, SMART, or CAMS software applications.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
