Job Responsibilities

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) is hiring field prosecutors to assist law enforcement officers with the prosecution of magistrate level offenses in South Carolina courts. The primary responsibilities involve the prosecution of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) cases. Prosecutors are embedded with patrol officers in the field, handling cases and providing legal advice.

• Prosecute traffic offenses under Title 56 of the South Carolina Code of Laws in summary courts of Berkeley, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg counties.
• Supervise Troop 6 paralegal and provide legal advice on Title 56-related topics.
• Prepare responses to discovery requests and handle assigned appeals to circuit court.
• Conduct training and mentoring for Department personnel on prosecution of Title 56 offenses.
• Handle pre-trial matters in selected Title 56 cases in summary court.
• Serve as Employee Advisor regarding investigation/disciplinary matters.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

• State Minimum Requirements: Juris doctor degree or equivalent from an accredited law school and experience as a practicing attorney.
• Agency Minimum Requirements: Juris doctor degree or equivalent from an accredited law school and five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Agency Minimum Requirements: Member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar.
• Agency Minimum Requirements: Completion of trial experience requirement pursuant to Rule 403, SCACR.
• Knowledge of general case, statutory and common law.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Maintain confidentiality of all matters and work independently.
• Valid Driver's License.

Background Checks

Prior to employment, a criminal records investigation and a comprehensive driving history review will be conducted. If hired, fingerprints will be collected and submitted to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Salary Range

If offered, the salary range for this position is between $90,000 - $95,000. Applicants must be willing to accept a salary within this range.
