About the role

The Attorney II assists and performs moderately complex legal work, including legal research, drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, and other legal documents, and representing the County in litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research, provide advice, and issue legal opinions on civil, legislative, and municipal matters.
  • Represent the County in civil litigation, mental-health cases, Administrative Procedure Act matters, and appeals from Jefferson County Municipal Court.
  • Handle Sunshine Law matters for the County.
  • Attend court appearances; manage subpoenas, depositions, document requests, and discovery.
  • Prepare and try cases, including witness examination, evidence presentation, and filing pre- and post-trial motions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate correspondence with opposing counsel.
  • Attend evening or daytime County Council meetings, Municipal Court dockets, and meetings of Boards and Commissions.
  • Draft and review contracts, ordinances, bills, resolutions, motions, deeds, pleadings, memoranda, briefs, and discovery documents.
  • Research local, state, and federal legislation.
  • Prepare legal briefs and memoranda of law.
  • File municipal ordinance violation proceedings.
  • Perform general office duties (copying, scanning, printing, filing).

Requirements

  • Admission to the Missouri bar.
  • Valid State Driver’s license.
  • May require early morning or late evening hours.

Work environment

Indoor office setting with low to moderate noise. Interaction with employees and the public; self-determined work pace.

Pay

$71,511 – $103,691, depending on qualifications.
