About the role
The Maricopa County Office of the Legal Defender seeks candidates to represent indigent clients appointed by the court who are charged with criminal felony offenses. This position involves providing representation in all stages of criminal proceedings, including initial appearances, status conferences, witness preliminary hearings, sentencings, mitigation hearings, restitution hearings, and negotiations.
Responsibilities
- Represent clients in court at scheduled hearings and trials
- Present oral arguments as necessary to support clients' legal interests
- Negotiate deals and resolutions with State attorneys on behalf of clients
- Research facts and analyze legal issues using various legal research tools
- Compose motions, briefs, correspondence, and other legal documents
- Prepare cases for court and review evidence on- and off-site
- Discuss and present analyses of legal issues to clients, court personnel, and others
- Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, co-workers, supervisors, and others in person and by phone
- Travel to courts, jails, detention centers, and correctional facilities to represent clients
- Attend continuing legal education seminars
Requirements
To be considered, candidates must have a Juris Doctor (JD) or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an ABA-approved law school, a license to practice law in Arizona, and one year of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably in criminal law and adult criminal matters.

Candidates should demonstrate strong legal skills, excellent communication abilities, and the ability to handle complex legal issues and client interactions.
Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential.

Pay
