About the Role
The assistant counsel performs legal functions for the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). Serves at the pleasure of the Chief Counsel. MoDOT will bring candidates onto the team as entry-level, intermediate, or senior level, based on your skills and experience. This opening is for one of our career-ladder positions which offers the opportunity for career advancement without having to participate in the competitive selection interview process. Responsibilities
- Assists the Commission and Department by drafting contracts, administrative rules, legislation, and legal memos/opinions.
- Provides legal advice and counsel to the Commission and MoDOT staff on various legal issues.
- Prepares, reviews, and examines contracts, land title commitments, real estate conveyances, and other various legal documents.
- Represents the Commission in litigation in matters covering, but not limited to, condemnation/inverse condemnation, tort liability and construction contracts.
- Assists in representing the MHTC in informal or contested case administrative hearings.
- Performs other responsibilities pursuant to classification and qualifications of assistant counsel as approved by the Commission and contained in the Chief Counsel's Office staff procedures manual.
Qualifications
- J.D. Degree
- Admission to the Missouri Bar
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in administrative law and civil litigation.
- Prior government service.
- Excellent research and writing skills are preferred.
Working Conditions
- Maintains attorney-client privilege.
- Requires occasional travel, including statewide overnight travel.
