ATTENDING PHYSICIAN X - MEDICINE (ONCOLOGY)

Location: John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Department of Medicine (Oncology)

About the role

The Attending Physician performs professional work in medical, educational, and research activities under the direction of the Chair of the Division of Hematology and Oncology. This role involves providing expert care and treatment for patients with cancer and hematological conditions, including inpatient, outpatient, and electronic consultative care. The physician will be credentialed in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology at Stroger and Provident Hospitals of Cook County Health (CCH), with potential ambulatory services at other sites.

The Attending Physician participates in clinical trials to investigate new treatment strategies and ensures high-quality care through education, supervision, and collaboration with primary care physicians, trainees, and nursing staff.

Responsibilities

• Provides inpatient, outpatient, and consultative care in oncology and/or hematology, supervising trainees throughout CCH.
• Sets standards and ensures consistent high-quality care for patients with hematology and oncology disorders by educating and guiding primary care physicians.
• Supervises and trains hematology/oncology subspecialty fellows, rotating residents, and medical students.
• Collaborates with and supervises hematology/oncology nurse clinicians and Infusion Center chemotherapy nursing staff.
• Maintains accurate medical records and timely completion of billing encounter forms.
• Participates in the division’s performance improvement program and departmental/hospital performance improvement activities.
• Attends meetings and participates on committees as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university (proof required at time of interview).
• Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment.
• Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by the start of employment.
• Board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in a Hematology or Oncology subspecialty, or Board eligibility in a pathway leading to certification within two (2) years of starting employment.
• Degrees awarded outside the United States (except those from U.S. territories or Canada) must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service (NACES or AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at the time of interview.
• Must successfully meet credentialing standards established by Cook County Health and Hospitals System, including licensure and certifications, no later than two (2) weeks prior to the start date.

• Experience with participation in NCI-sponsored clinical trials.

This position functions within a healthcare environment. The incumbent must adhere to all hospital and department-specific safety requirements, including:
