About the role

The OU Athletic Writing Center welcomes and encourages applications from students in a variety of academic disciplines. Student Writing Consultants provide writing support for student athletes in scheduled 1:1 appointments, walk-in appointments, and writing workshops throughout the semester. This position offers opportunities for professional development and ongoing support from our Support Services Coordinator.

Writing consultants work an average of 10 hours per week and may work up to 20 hours per week. Schedules are built based on student athletes’ needs and individual consultant availability.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with writers through regularly scheduled appointments and walk-ins
  • Develop, plan, prepare, and implement a strategic writing approach for all writing appointments
  • Attend regular meetings, trainings, and collaborations in-person or on Zoom
  • Complete daily reports for each assigned student
  • Be open to providing and receiving constructive feedback about sessions
  • Use effective communication skills to engage students in conversations that maximize their brainstorming potential
  • Encourage students to develop ideas, maintain and document sources, and revise for readability
  • Provide coaching using the results from TurnItIn.com
  • Communicate with other Writing Consultants and the Coordinator often
  • Assist with special projects and events as assigned
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and consultant education
  • Arrive in a timely manner
  • Clearly and effectively deliver instruction
  • Keep all student information confidential
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in the Fall 2026 Term as an undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Oklahoma
  • Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status
  • Must have successfully completed both English Composition courses with an A or B
  • Must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be proficient in MLA, APA, and Chicago formats
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate material while engaging with student-athletes in a positive manner
  • Must be willing and able to communicate and build relationships with a varied group of students and colleagues
  • Must be willing and able to gain and maintain working knowledge of university, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations
  • Must be willing and able to adhere to standards of conduct for Athletics Academics Tutoring Staff
  • Hiring contingent upon a background check

Qualifications

  • Experience working as a tutor for undergraduate or graduate students (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of university, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations (preferred)

Pay
