不機嫌な彼女達
About the Artist
Backside works. is a contemporary artist based in Fukuoka, Japan, whose work revolves around the concept of "heroines" and mixed subculture art. Inspired by 1980s and 1990s anime, manga, and other subcultures, the artist remains anonymous—no real name, age, gender, or facial exposure is disclosed.
Using a diverse range of media, including canvas painting, silkscreen, giclée, and stickers, Backside works. creates mixed-media contemporary art that brings imagined heroines to life. The artist’s signature style evokes manga and anime production techniques, often capturing fleeting expressions of female characters as if frozen from a sequence of cel drawings. Works frequently feature girls as motifs, blending Japanese otaku culture, street culture, and influences from animation, manga, and graffiti art. Skilled in pen drawing and spray paint, the artist is known for guerrilla-style releases and popular collaborations with brands and shops.
About the Work
This piece was exhibited at Art Fair Tokyo 2021. The description from the artist’s Instagram (@backsideworks) reads:
“Four heroines showcasing their finest sulks across various situations. But don’t worry—depending on the lunch you take them to, their moods might just improve a little.”
Amidst the rapid evolution of society into a highly information-driven landscape from the Heisei to Reiwa eras, the art market has diversified, and its barriers have lowered. While the term “art bubble” reflects this expansion, large-scale collecting is just one way to engage with art. Backside works. envisions an alternative: decorating a one-room space with a personal heroine and imagining daily stories around her. The artist prioritizes “what is depicted” over “who created it,” focusing on whether the presence on canvas can energize the viewer. The core concept is the creation of “your very own heroine.”
