About the Role

The Assurance Senior Associate, Non-Profit & Healthcare will coordinate day-to-day "in-charge" duties including planning, fieldwork, and wrap-up. Responsibilities include preparing financial statements with disclosures, applying GAAP, documenting and assessing control systems, and acting as the client contact for basic questions. This role also involves training staff and serving as the main liaison with BDO RISE.

Responsibilities

  • Control Environment:
    • Apply knowledge of transactional flow and key cycles to complete audit work.
    • Document, validate, and assess the design and operating effectiveness of clients’ internal control systems.
    • Identify and communicate improvements to client internal controls and accounting procedures.
    • Provide on-the-job training to engagement staff and supervise their work.
  • GAAP:
    • Communicate financial statement disclosure requirements to clients.
    • Draft complex sets of financial statements with disclosures.
    • Apply new accounting pronouncements to client situations.
    • Identify, analyze, and discuss alternative GAAP with the engagement team and client.
    • Identify complex accounting issues and escalate them to superiors.
    • Coach less experienced team members in new areas.
    • Consider Uniform Guidance rules for audits under Government Auditing Standards.
  • GAAS:
    • Formulate and communicate the audit plan.
    • Apply GAAS to complex issues and consult others as needed.
    • Employ audit skepticism and adjust testing as necessary.
    • Utilize the BDO audit manual and document deviations with approval.
  • Methodology:
    • Coordinate day-to-day audit execution, ensuring adherence to timetables, policies, and procedures.
    • Track budget vs. actual and notify the engagement team of variances.
    • Apply BDO audit approach, tools, and technology, including proper archiving.
    • Identify and propose outcomes to critical issues.
  • Research:
    • Utilize internal and external research tools to document issues and conclusions.
    • Research complex accounting areas and form initial opinions on correct treatment.
    • Assist in gathering information about the client’s business and accounting system.
    • Draft the Audit Planning Document and create audit programs using APT Next Gen.
    • Collaborate with the engagement manager to allocate audit work.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Provide verbal and written performance feedback to Audit Associates.
    • Supervise work assignments of Audit Associates within the engagement team.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required).
  • Master’s degree in Accountancy (preferred).
  • Three (3) or more years of prior experience in public accounting (required).
  • One (1) or more years of prior supervisory experience (preferred).
  • One (1) or more years of relevant experience in the healthcare industry (preferred).
  • One (1) or more years of nonprofit audit experience (preferred).

Qualifications

  • CPA license (preferred) or actively pursuing completion of CPA licensing requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Prior experience with assurance applications and research tools (beneficial).
  • Solid understanding of audit planning and execution for private companies.
  • Knowledge of internal accounting controls, GAAP, GAAS, and professional standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently, and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Superior analytical and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment with attention to detail.
  • Strong project management skills.

Pay

Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Ranges by location:

  • Maryland: $78,000 - $93,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $84,000 - $105,000
  • Virginia: $88,000 - $98,000
  • Washington DC: $78,000 - $93,000
