About the Role

The Maryland Transit Administration is seeking an experienced Assistant Superintendent Transportation professional working in the Transit field. The incumbent performs Assistant Managerial level of work directing and coordinating the day-to-day transportation services of a Maryland Transit Administration division. The selected employee will assist in directing the planning and development of methods to effectively utilize bus, light rail, metro, or mobility operators. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for assigning equipment and personnel to meet all operating requirements in accordance with all established MTA practices, policies, and procedures.

The incumbent directly supervises dispatchers, starters, operators, technical, professional employees, and subordinate Transportation Supervisors. The Assistant Superintendent work is performed in an office setting and receives managerial supervision from a Superintendent Transportation or other designated officials. The incumbent is required to periodically travel and work outdoors at various locations throughout the MTA service area. This position is located in Baltimore City, Maryland.

Responsibilities

• Direct and coordinate the day-to-day transportation services of an MTA division.
• Assist in planning and developing methods to effectively utilize bus, light rail, metro, or mobility operators.
• Assign equipment and personnel to meet all operating requirements in accordance with MTA practices, policies, and procedures.
• Supervise dispatchers, starters, operators, technical, professional employees, and subordinate Transportation Supervisors.
• Periodically travel and work outdoors at various locations throughout the MTA service area.
• Foster a positive safety culture by leading with integrity and establishing departmental safety practices and procedures.
• Attend and participate in safety meetings and adhere to and enforce all safety rules, policies, regulations, and personal protective equipment requirements.
• Ensure employees are properly trained and provided with personal protective equipment to conduct their job functions safely.
• Report hazards, unsafe acts, near misses, injuries, and accidents immediately to the Office of Safety.
• Collaboratively work to mitigate reported hazards in a timely manner.
• Conduct safety risk assessments and/or job hazard analyses as needed.

Requirements

• Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
• Five (5) years of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a mass transit system and/or related operations that required the resolution of operational problems related to scheduled service, equipment failure, equipment maintenance, inclement weather, or other service disruptions.
• One (1) year of the required experience must have involved supervisory or program management responsibilities.
• Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
• If assigned to Field Operations (Bus Transportation), a valid State of Maryland Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with a Passenger (P) endorsement.
• Ability to be on call 24 hours a day and maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call-back requirements.
• Willingness to work shifts, evenings, holidays, and weekends.
• Considered an "Essential Employee" and must agree to all policies and procedures relating to this status.

Additional Information

• Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
• Additional education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at a rate of thirty credit hours for each year of the required non-supervisory experience for up to four years.
• U.S. Armed Forces military service experience may be substituted for the required education and experience on a year-for-year basis.
