About the role
Manages mechanical maintenance operations within an assigned operating area to ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective inspection, servicing, and repair of passenger rail equipment. Leads first-line management teams and unionized employees, implements regulatory and safety requirements, and drives operational execution aligned with established standards, schedules, and budgets.
Responsibilities
- Plan, direct, and monitor day-to-day mechanical maintenance and inspection activities to meet safety, quality, service, and productivity standards across assigned facilities or territories.
- Lead, coach, and hold accountable first-line supervisors and represented employees; manage workforce deployment, performance, and adherence to labor agreements and company policies.
- Implement and enforce applicable regulatory requirements, safety programs, and maintenance instructions; ensure corrective actions are taken to address deficiencies or incidents.
- Manage assigned operating budgets, schedules, materials, and contractor services; monitor costs, productivity, and asset utilization within established financial controls.
- Identify and implement process improvements; partner with cross-functional stakeholders to support operational initiatives, service delivery, and maintenance planning.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 7 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 9 years of relevant work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Working knowledge of passenger rail equipment, maintenance practices, inspection programs, and repair processes within a regulated transportation environment.
- Ability to lead supervisors and unionized workforces, apply labor agreements, and address performance, attendance, and conduct issues effectively and consistently.
- Knowledge of applicable safety programs and regulatory frameworks governing rail or transportation maintenance operations; ability to translate requirements into execution.
- Skill in planning, scheduling, budget monitoring, contractor oversight, and basic financial analysis to support operational decision-making.
- Ability to communicate clearly with diverse audiences and apply sound judgment to resolve operational issues in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment.
Pay
The salary/hourly range is $113,200.00 – $146,664.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary.
