About the role

SUNY Maritime College is seeking experienced towing industry professionals to join the Marine Transportation Department in a full-time instructional role. This position is ideal for a licensed tugboat or towing vessel mariner including those currently sailing who is interested in transitioning ashore while remaining closely connected to the industry.

Responsibilities

  • Bring real-world towing experience into the classroom, simulator, and waterfront training environment, preparing students for careers in:
    • Tug and barge operations
    • Harbor assist and ship handling
    • Cargo handling and safety
    • Coastal and inland towing
    • Small vessel commercial operations
  • Teach courses such as:
    • Advanced Towing Operations
    • Business of Towing
    • Bridge Resource Management (BRM)
  • Deliver hands-on, practical instruction using:
    • Real-world case studies
    • Vessel operations scenarios
    • Simulation and waterfront training
  • Prepare students for U.S. Coast Guard limited license and towing careers
  • Set up and prepare cadet shipping billets/apprentice mate billets with industry partners and evaluate apprentice/cadet projects
  • Mentor and advise students pursuing careers in the towing industry
  • Support and utilize:
    • Simulation labs
    • Waterfront training facilities
    • Instructional vessels
  • Build relationships with:
    • Tug and towing companies
    • Maritime employers
    • Industry organizations
  • Participate in:
    • Recruitment and workforce pipeline development
    • Program improvement and curriculum updates
    • Department and college service activities

Qualifications

  • U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels (1600 GRT or greater)
  • Valid Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR)
  • Recent towing industry experience while actively sailing under license
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Tug and barge operations
    • Vessel handling and safety
    • Regulatory requirements
  • Ability to translate operational experience into practical instruction
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (Exception: Highly qualified licensed mariners without a degree may be considered based on experience)

Skills

  • Knowledge of towing operations
  • Ability to teach practical skills
  • Experience with maritime simulators
  • Industry engagement or workforce development experience
