About the role

The Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement and Dean of Students (AVCSE) serves as a senior leader within the Division of Enrollment Services and Student Engagement at Indiana University Northwest. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, the role aligns student engagement strategies with institutional priorities and IU 2030 goals.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides executive-level leadership for a comprehensive portfolio of student engagement functions that enhance the student experience, support student success, and foster a culture of belonging and engagement.
  • Provides executive leadership for the university's student engagement strategy, aligning programs, services, and resources with institutional priorities and IU 2030 goals.
  • Establishes measurable goals and performance indicators related to student engagement, persistence, retention, and overall student success.
  • Serves as a senior advisor and strategic partner to the Vice Chancellor and represents the division in key university, community, and external initiatives.
  • Provides executive oversight of student engagement units and directly supervises departmental leaders responsible for Student Activities, Career Services, Counseling Services, Basic Needs, TRIO Student Support Services, Student and Community Engagement Programming, Accessibility Services, and Scholar Programs.
  • Develops a collaborative, high-performing leadership team focused on delivering coordinated, student-centered programs and services.
  • Promotes effective cross-functional collaboration with academic and administrative units to strengthen the student experience.
  • Provides strategic oversight of divisional budgets, financial planning, staffing, and resource allocation.
  • Led policy development, organizational planning, and complex decision-making across assigned functional areas.
  • Provides senior-level leadership in response to sensitive, complex, and high-risk student matters and serves in a decision-making capacity in the absence of the Vice Chancellor, as assigned.
  • Advances access to student programs, services, leadership opportunities, and support resources.
  • Provides leadership for initiatives supporting student well-being, accessibility, belonging, and comprehensive excellence.
  • Provides leadership and oversight for the campus student conduct process and serves as the campus Student Conduct Officer.
  • Reviews, investigates, and adjudicates student disciplinary matters, including personal misconduct and designated matters involving academic misconduct.
  • Serves as a senior campus resource to faculty and staff addressing complex student concerns, including significant personal, behavioral, health, and well-being matters.
  • Serves as a primary member of the campus threat assessment/behavioral consultation team and CARE Team, providing leadership and consultation regarding students of concern and appropriate institutional response.
  • Supports fair access and student belonging initiatives across Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

General Responsibilities

  • Contributes on senior leadership teams to formulate strategic planning and the highest-level operational objectives for student services areas.
  • Establishes long-term business plans and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Directs leadership staff who provide supervision to student services teams.
  • Responsible for escalated operational issues, including human resources and/or people management situations.
  • Drives innovation and excellence within the area of student services; reviews and creates policies and procedures.
  • Determines overall budget for student services teams; reviews and approves financial proposals from direct reporting leaders; has significant fiscal responsibilities that require frequent interaction with executive leaders.
  • Provides expertise and identifies grant and/or funding opportunities; develops business relationships across the university and externally.
  • Stays up to date and works collaboratively with student service standards, technologies, policies, and procedures and works collaboratively with other student services leaders across departments and/or campuses in determining standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures; ensures the adoption and implementation by direct reporting leaders.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in law, public health, public affairs, counseling, social work, or related field. Preferred: Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field.
  • Required: 5 years in student programs, higher education student affairs, or related field, and 3 years of management experience in a relevant field. Preferred: Progressive leadership experience in student affairs, including supervision of multiple functional areas; Demonstrated ability to lead complex, organization-wide initiatives; Experience advancing student success and engagement strategies; Experience working with multiple student populations; Experience in a regional or commuter campus environment; Experience managing high-impact or high-risk student services; Demonstrated success in strategic planning and cross-functional leadership.
