About the role

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is looking for an Associate Tax Auditor to independently conduct audits of retailers, primarily in the restaurant and cannabis industry, as well as other business enterprises. This role includes conducting fraud and tax evasion audits and potentially testifying in court regarding determined liabilities. The position is located in Oakland.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct audits of retailers in the restaurant and cannabis industry and other business enterprises
  • Conduct fraud and tax evasion audits
  • Testify in court regarding liabilities determined
  • Make audit appointments and meet with taxpayers and their representatives
  • Explain audit findings to taxpayers
  • Prepare appropriate audit reports and written correspondence to taxpayers

Qualifications

Eligibility to apply: Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list or LEAP eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, or have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility (attach letter if available). SROA and Surplus candidates receive priority. Individuals eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered.

Promotional exam criteria (for promotional eligibility):

  • Permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, OR
  • Current or former legislative employee for 2+ years (Gov. Code 18990), OR
  • Current or former non-elected exempt executive branch employee for 2+ consecutive years (Gov. Code 18992), OR
  • Honorably discharged from U.S. military with service disability, or honorably discharged from active duty (Gov. Code 18991) — provide DD 214 at application

Special requirements

  • Must pass fingerprinting and background investigation
  • Designated as a mobile worker position — incumbent must spend majority of time (50% or more) working at various locations other than home/office in a single day
  • Travel required up to 50% of the time, including overnight travel, evenings, and weekends, statewide
  • Work long irregular hours, both in and out of the office, in various locations
  • Subject to State of California's Personal Leave Program per the California Budget Act of 2025
