Under the direction of a licensed classroom teacher, the Associate Teacher ensures curriculum implementation, assists with classroom organization, materials preparation, and supervises paraprofessional staff. Provides support to ensure all documentation is completed and the classroom is prepared for the next day.

Responsibilities

  • Student Support:
    • Ensure staff provides ongoing instruction and academic programming.
    • Ensure staff follows all functional communication protocols.
  • Classroom Support:
    • Follow the classroom schedule and assist with daily material preparation.
    • Maintain classroom cleanliness, organization, and material storage.
    • Support implementation of Positive Behavior Support Plan and behavioral protocols.
    • Assist in conducting academic, group, and social activities.
    • In the absence of the classroom teacher, ensure all classroom and supervisory duties are fulfilled, including staff observations and performance evaluations.
  • Behavior Management:
    • Manage behavioral episodes positively and respectfully per Crotched Mountain policies.
    • Use training to de-escalate students safely during immediate safety risks.
    • Perform standing restraints safely and effectively.
    • Anticipate and mitigate events likely to cause problems.
  • Medical Support:
    • Support students' medical needs and recognize signs of impending medical concerns.
    • Administer medication as prescribed when adequately trained.
    • Respond to seizure protocols for students with seizure disorders.
    • Respond to injury emergencies, contact required personnel, and document incidents per policy.
  • Collaboration:
    • Develop cooperation and teamwork within the group.
    • Facilitate or attend classroom meetings, trainings, and workshops as assigned.
    • Keep the teacher and team members informed and up-to-date.
  • Documentation:
    • Complete all required paperwork thoroughly and on time.
    • Ensure staff completes daily documentation, including medication sheets, one-to-one sheets, IEP data collection, Behavioral Support Plan data, and shift logs.
    • Accurately document medical information using Matrix Point of Care.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Be immediately ready to support the classroom and students at the start of each shift.
    • Use prompting and prompt fading techniques.
    • Attend all required team and supervision meetings (e.g., RBT).
    • Report feedback, observations, and concerns to the teacher.
    • Check email at least once per day.
    • Ensure only encouraging conversations occur around students; report negative conversations.
    • Maintain appropriate, positive, and functional interactions with students.
    • Ensure staff have all necessary materials for students at all times.
    • Distribute teaching materials and follow teaching protocols, discrete trials, and naturalistic teaching techniques.
    • Complete a physical every three years per child care licensing regulations.
    • Advocate and protect clients’ rights per current policies and procedures.
    • Participate in vocational opportunities, field trips, community outings, and special events.
    • Assist with meals, snacks, and activities of daily living (ADLs) following prescribed protocols.

Requirements

  • Willing and able to work with students of all ability levels.
  • Obtain and maintain a Para-educator II certification through the New Hampshire Department of Education.
  • Complete RBT training within six months of hire.
  • Develop an Individual Professional Development Plan with measurable goals.
  • Complete 50 hours of professional development activities over three years aligned with identified goals.
  • Certification renewal required every three years.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Standard driver’s license (class C or D).
  • 3–5 years of related experience.
