Associate, Shelter Evening

About the role
A Shelter Associate I at Catholic Charities helps maintain structure and order in the living environment by following established procedures and guidelines. This role involves direct interaction with shelter participants, crisis response, and maintaining accurate documentation.
Responsibilities
- Follow procedures and guidelines set forth in operating manuals.
- Accurately and promptly complete all required documentation/data, including entering participant information in daily logs before ending shift.
- Maintain current knowledge of ongoing events and changes by reading logs.
- Enforce shelter rules uniformly and consistently.
- Respond appropriately to needs and crisis situations, such as mediating interpersonal problems and summoning emergency personnel.
- Communicate with staff to resolve problems with individual participants.
- Complete necessary records and reports, both on computer and manually.
- Distribute and inventory supplies; provide information and referrals.
- Keep supervisor informed on shelter developments.
- Support, promote, and adhere to Catholic Charities’ vision, mission, values, and Code of Ethics.
- Reflect Catholic Charities’ commitment to treating all persons with dignity and respect.
- Maintain confidentiality of participant and agency information.
- Answer phones and provide internal and external referrals to community partners.
- Assist safety desk in verifying urine analysis results and completing breathalyzers.
- Act as a good steward of Agency resources (human, financial, and capital).
- Participate effectively as a team member through communication, cooperation, and problem-solving.
- Attend required staff trainings and programs.
- Help participants safely exit the building in emergencies.
- Perform any other assigned tasks or duties.
Requirements
- Experience working with people in crisis.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful and/or emergency situations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of word processing and typing to enter participant information.
- Knowledge of the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
- Ability to interact effectively as a team member and independently with staff and a diverse participant base.
- Attended some college working toward an Associate or Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS); and 3 to 6 months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group situations.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to use hands, speak, see, and hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk (including up and down stairs), sit, and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to stoop and bend.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds; occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to carry out physical demands of emergency procedure protocol.
Work Environment
- Minimal travel within the local area.
- Moderate noise level in the work environment.
