About the role
The Associate Scientist 1 will perform laboratory and support duties in accordance with standard operating procedures, including handling, processing, and analyzing biological threat agent samples under BSL-2/BSL-3 conditions.
Responsibilities
- Receive, process, and transfer operational, QA, verification, and proficiency test samples that may contain biological threat agents; may require lifting up to ~50–60 lbs and extended walking or stair use.
- Perform repetitive motions (e.g., twisting, cutting, pipetting, gripping) for 1–4 hours daily.
- Conduct non-research biological science work using microbiological and molecular techniques such as DNA extraction and real-time PCR to identify and characterize bacterial and viral pathogens.
- Work across multiple laboratory areas (clean, high/low titer) using various biological safety cabinets and hoods under BSL-2/BSL-3 conditions.
- Wear extensive PPE (e.g., Tyvek suits, respirators, gloves) for up to four hours at a time.
- Prepare reagents and samples; maintain chain-of-custody; interpret results; enter data into computerized systems.
- Perform routine equipment calibration, cleaning, assembly, and maintenance across lab areas.
- Collect, process, and analyze internal laboratory swipes/swabs for QA/QC and contamination monitoring.
- Decontaminate workspaces, BSCs, hoods/air boxes, and equipment using bleach and alcohol; dispose of biohazardous waste up to 40 lbs and operate autoclaves with proper PPE.
- Restock and maintain inventory of supplies and consumables up to 70 lbs; rotate stock and track expiration dates.
- Support annual inventory of DHS-procured durable equipment and property (serial numbers, disposition, POs, packing slips).
- Perform QA/QC testing of reagents per SOPs and the Laboratory Operations QAPP; assist with acceptance testing of instruments.
- Adhere to QA/QC requirements under Public Health Laboratory quality management systems and customer QAPP; maintain compliance documentation.
- Analyze routine external QA samples per customer SOPs and QA Program guidance; archive, store, and ship samples up to 40 lbs.
- Follow federal, state, and local regulations, safety policies, and DHS safeguarding procedures for sensitive information.
- Prepare written and oral technical reports; make recommendations to the Lead Biological Scientist.
